On Wednesday, Netflix released the trailer for The Romantics, a four-part documentary show which is said to be a tribute to filmmaker Yash Chopra and his production house Yash Raj Films. The series aims to explore the three generations of actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh and their views on Indian cinema.
But that's not all! According to the teaser, India's biggest filmmaker Aditya Chopra will also make an appearance in the docu-series, giving his first on-camera interview to celebrate his lauded father who is referred to as "the creator of matchmaking."
The last time Aditya, director of India’s much-acclaimed rom-com Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, gave an interview was with a print magazine in 1995.
As revealed by Variety, the star-studded series features 35 top representatives of the Hindi-language film industry and "dives into the history of Bollywood through the lens of the studio’s impact over the past 50 years in making Bollywood globally known."
Included in the list of interviewees are none other than Juhi Chawla, Rani Mukerji, Kajol, Ayushmann Khurrana, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Karan Johar and Hrithik Roshan, among others.
Talking about Yash, Karan says in the trailer, “I’d watch all those beautiful movies but it was Yash Chopra’s cinema that caught my eye.” We also see Big B share his two cents about Yash, describing him as a “young filmmaker wanting to make different films.”
In the two-minute clip, Rani also reveals that it was Yash who believed in her when she said she wanted to portray a modern Indian woman, moving away from the old, gendered stereotypes. Ranveer also notes Yash was the first director who promised to cast him and believed in his talent after watching his audition.
As the trailer concludes, all the actors are shocked as they are told that Yash's son Aditya is going to give an interview. Hearing this, Dixit says, “He is very private, he hates going out." Other actors also point out how Aditya has never been in an interview for decades, making the whole documentary much more intriguing to watch.
Directed by Smriti Mundhra, The Romantics will premiere on Netflix on February 14.
