Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial made the first detailed visit to Adiala Jail on Friday. The main focus of the hon’ble Chief Justice was the provision of a speedy legal aid facility to the prisoners and directed the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) to initiate the facility, terming the same as the fundamental right of the prison population.
In his visit to the Rawalpindi Central Jail, the CJ assured the poor prisoners that the government of Pakistan would give them access to lawyers.
As per Adiala Jail sources, Justice Bandial visited the barracks of women and juvenile prisoners and heard their grievances. He assured the inmates that their problems would be solved soon under jail reforms.
Along with CJ, Justice Athar Minallah and Registrar Supreme Court Ishrat Ali also visited the prison.
CJ Bandial directed the authority concerned to solve the problems faced by the prisoners in Adiala Jail and indicated to visit the prison again.
Strict security arrangements had been made on the occasion of CJ’s visit. After a three and a half hour trip to the penitentiary, the top judge went back to Islamabad under tight security
During the visit, Sessions Judge Tahir Mehmood, Sessions Judge Atta Rabbani, Chief Commissioner Islamabad Captain Retired Usman, Sessions Judge Rawalpindi Mushtaq Ahmad Ajala, Senior Civil Judge Rana Mushahid, Rabia Chaudhry Agha and Waqar Ahmed were also present.
