BAHAWALPUR:

Police claimed to have killed a man involved in a number of heinous crimes, including killing children after rape, in an encounter.

The encounter took place in the area of Hasilpur. Saddar police said they had set up a checkpoint to arrest Mohammad Safdar Panwar of Chak 188 who was wanted in several cases.

On seeing the police, three men on a motorcycle opened fire at them, officials said, adding that two bullets hit a government vehicle.

The police personnel took shelter among trees and fired at the attackers.

When the firing stopped, the accused, Safdar, was found dead. A 30-bore pistol was found near the body, while the accomplices of the deceased escaped by taking advantage of darkness.

Cases of murder of two children were registered against the deceased in the Hasilpur Saddar police station.

A local resident said the deceased was also suspected of having murdered several other children.
