RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi police, in what they called an accountability action against the black sheep within the forces, handed dismissal, demotion and other punishments to a number of its personnel on charges of corruption, laxity and other misdemeanours.

According to sources within the department, Rawalpindi CPO Shehzad Nadeem Bukhari while hearing the cases in the ‘Ardal Room’ dismissed 16 policemen and cancelled annual increments of 36 officers and personnel accused of corruption and incompetence.

Former SHOs of Westridge, New Town and Civil Line police stations were among those who were punished.

The sources said Bukhari dismissed ASI Muhammad Ishaq for mismanagement and incompetence and added that the CPO also demoted 16 officers and personnel including inspector Aziz Aslam, SI Tariq Mehmood, ASI Shahid Mehmood, SI Muhammad Akram, Inspector Sajid and others posted in different police stations.

Meanwhile, 36 officers and personnel including former Morgah SHO, Sub-Inspector Muhammad Adeel, Inspector Tariq bin Aziz, former Civil Line SHO, Westridge SHO Waqas Safir, and former Murreee SHO Jameel have been demoted due to mismanagement and incompetence.

On the other hand, 104 officials were given certificates of appreciation and cash prizes for discharging their professional duties in an outstanding manner.

The CPO said that self-accountability was crucial for any organisation to grow. “Appreciation and reward for good performance and appropriate punishment for incompetence and corruption is the mark of our department,” he said.

Cop held for kidnapping

A constable of the Rawalpindi police has been booked and apprehended for his alleged involvement in a case pertaining to kidnapping for ransom.

According to a police spokesperson, the constable named Aqib Shehzad along with his two accomplices allegedly kidnapped two persons, both residents of Peshawar, and demanded a ransom of Rs1 million for their release.

The spokesperson said a complainant named Imad Akbar told the police that he had sent two of his employees, Javed and Ahmed to Rawalpindi from Peshawar on December 6 with Rs300,000 in cash for purchasing goods.

“Upon their arrival at the Pirwadhai General Bus stand, Aqib and his two accomplices abducted them and continued torturing them,” the complainant said.

He further told that the suspects demanded ransom for their release, at which Rahimullah, a friend of one of the abductees, paid Rs600,000 as ransom.

The complainant alleged that as soon as the accused received the ransom money, they also took Rahimullah hostage and demanded more ransom from his friends so another amount of Rs.100,000 was transferred to police constable Aqib’s bank account after which the abductees were released.

The police spokesperson said that the Rawalpindi CPO received this complaint through one of his social media accounts.

He added that on the CPO's order, a case was registered against police constable Aqib Shehzad and his two accomplices named Shoaib Khan and Mustafa.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson said the police constable has been arrested while his two accomplices are on the run. The policeman has been booked under the charges of misuse of authority and corruption, he added.
