RAWALPINDI:

Punjab Prisons Inspector General (IG) Malik Mubashir Ahmad Khan has ordered jail administrations across Punjab including Adiala prison authorities to conduct physical and mental screening of incoming inmates before shifting them to their respective cells.

According to an official source, the aim of the move is to ensure the physical and psychological well-being of prisoners.

In this regard, the IG has sent a letter to the regional DIGs of the province stating that before presenting the inmates before the jail superintendent and deputy superintendent, each prisoner must undergo a psychological examination by an expert psychologist.

He further said the evaluation of prisoners will assist in improving both the treatment of prisoners and the effectiveness of the prison system.

Additionally, the prisoner will be able to get psychological treatment while in imprisonment. Prisoners will be safeguarded from negative thoughts like sadness and suicide through psychological treatment, he added.

The high official stressed that psychological well-being is equally important as physical well-being for a peaceful society.
