LAHORE:

President Dr Arif Alvi has called for the appointment of separate trainers for differently-abled students in the mainstream schools.

Co-chairing a meeting along with Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to review facilities for differently-abled persons, he said such children had special abilities that could be brought forward through training.

The president and the chief minister decided to coordinate with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for the registration of differently-abled persons.

President Alvi maintained that the collection of accurate data about the blind and other differently-abled people was important to improve the welfare work for them.

Ramps should be built in the commercial areas to facilitate the people with special needs, he said and noted that implementation of a five per cent job quota would provide relief to the differently-abled people who had brought laurels in various fields.

The chief minister said he had created a separate department for differently-abled people in 2003, set up 170 institutions and launched free transport for students with special needs.
