'Smart cars' proposed to tackle crimes in Karachi

Cars will be equipped with modern devices, digital communication system, internet and body cams, says DIG South

Amid reports of a "record-breaking" rise in street crimes in Karachi, the introduction of smart cars was proposed as an effective weapon in anti-crime operations.

The proposal was made by DIG South who gave a briefing during a review meeting chaired by Inspector General of Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon on security, law and order situation and police measures against crime in the city's South district.

The DIG South briefed regarding strategy and action plan of South police against crimes including the current law and order situation, modern techniques, equipment including high powered cameras and search devices, said a statement.

He also proposed the introduction of smart cars equipped with facilities like modern devices, digital communication systems, internet and body cameras. "This initiative will not only discourage criminals but will also develop a sense of security among citizens," he added.

During the briefing, the DIG South also briefed about all the activities of Shaheen Force including the investigation department, cell phones recovery unit and case files preparation rooms.

Sindh IG while giving instructions regarding the change of CCTV cameras in different areas of the South welcomed the proposal about smart cars.

The IG Sindh said that it should be given the name of police patrol car, saying that workable suggestions for its introduction should be sent to the Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for formal approval.

After verification measures, the smart car (police patrol car) project can be started in the southern zone, he added.

The IG Sindh said that in case of any incident, the use of the crime scene unit should be made very concrete and effective so that the incidental evidence is also collected. By making it safe, it can be made more successful and productive against crimes, he observed.

He instructed that a regular SOP should be prepared regarding all the affairs and actions of the Shaheen Force.

On the occasion, DSP Investigation Clifton Fahmida Abbasi, SHOs and SIOs were given certificates of appreciation for their good performance in the South zone while certificates of appreciation were also given to the Head Constable and Constable for their excellent performance on the Machar Colony incident.

Additional IG Karachi Javed Akhtar Odhu, DIG South, DIG Traffic, SSPs South, Kemari, City, Investigations, AIG Operations Sindh, AIG Logistics and AIG Admin participated in the meeting.

Basic policing needs to be enforced not look at ways to eat up more of taxpayer s money with all these technological advances. What happened to the CCTVs Motorcycle Squads etc etc. All this good is said and done in societies that have the will.
