Punjab government has already slapped a ban on the film about transgender relationship.Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh on Tuesday threw out a petition demanding ban on a recently released film Joyland.
The Punjab government has already slapped a ban on the film about transgender relationship. However, it is being displayed at cinemas in Karachi.
SHC Chief Justice heading a two-member bench heard a petition against screening of Joyland in Sindh.
The petitioner took the stance that the release of the film is against Article 227 on the Constitution of Pakistan. The article states that all existing laws shall be brought in conformity with the Injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Holy Quran and Sunnah, the petitioner said. “As per the Constitution no action can be committed against the teachings and spirit of Islam in Pakistan,” he said.
Sindh chief justice asked the petitioner if he had seen the film. He said, “no, the content of the film cannot be discussed in court. Islam does not allow love and marriage between a man and a transgender woman.”
Justice Sheikh remarked that you have not even seen the film and came here to demand a ban on its screening. Declaring the petition for ban on Joyland as frivolous he declared it inadmissible.
