KARACHI:

A suspected member of Lyari gang war allegedly involved in multiple killings was arrested after a gunfight with police in Machar Colony on the night between Friday and Saturday.

SSP Keamari Fida Hussain Januri identified the arrested suspect as Noor Mustafa who, he said, was an active member of Lyari gang war and wanted to police in multiple cases. He was injured in a gun battle with police in Machar Colony, while his accomplices managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness.

While sharing details of the encounter, SSP Januri said that Mustafa and his accomplices opened fire on a police party from the forest side of Machar Colony. In the retaliatory fire from the police party, Mustafa was injured and subsequently arrested.

He further said that Mustafa was involved in the torture and murder of employees of a private telecom company on October 28, and killing of four other people. He was also absconding in the October 30 police encounter case. He is facing several charges, including terrorism.

Separately, Zaman Town police arrested two suspects after an exchange of fire near Korangi No.1 near Mehrun Nisa Hospital. The injured suspects, identified by police as Noor Alam and Abdul Kareem, were shifted to Jinnah Hospital for treatment.

Two TT pistols, mobile phones, cash and a motorcycle were recovered from their possession. Police have registered a case against the suspects who, they said, were involved in several incidents of street crime and robbery.

Meanwhile, Clifton police arrested a suspect following a shootout in Clifton Block 9. The suspect, identified as Muhammad Shahbaz, was shifted to Jinnah Hospital for treatment. A handgun and a motorcycle were recovered from his possession. Police claimed the suspect was wanted in several incidents of street crime.

Saudabad police, meanwhile, arrested two suspects, identified as Munawar and Ghulam Qadir Baloch, in an injured condition following a shootout in Malir. Two handguns and a stolen motorcycle were seized from them.

In yet another operation, Gazri police foiled the escape attempt of a "rickshaw gang" following an incident of street crime on Golf Court Road in DHA Phase 4. The three members of the busted gang were identified as Mazhar Hussain, Muhammad Hanif, and Sajid.

Two illegal weapons and six snatched mobile phones were also seized. The suspects reportedly told police that they used to pick pockets of passengers during the rickshaw rides and that they have done this several times in DHA and Clifton.

Mazhar is already wanted in case registered in Artillery Maidan police station, while more cases have been registered against all the suspects and investigation was started.
