KARACHI:

The customs officials have seized more than 100 rare birds, imported from South Africa by a businessman on account of incomplete papers.

The birds seized at Karachi Airport are not being cared of properly, which poses serious risks to their lives and there are chances that these pets might die in captivity.

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi in a letter to the customs authorities, has requested the custody of the birds to the KMC authorities immediately because the lives of the birds are in danger.

After contacting the customs officials, Zaidi has also written a letter to the Federal Meteorological Minister that the animals seized by the customs should be handed over to the KMC so that the lives of the birds could be saved. Zaidi in his letter to the Customs Collector said that the people who ordered these birds have no objection on handing over the custody of the birds to KMC. Customs officials say that the meteorological department can give permission to handover the animals. So far no orders have been issued from the concerned department.
