It’s been six years since we saw Fawad Khan on the big screen in Bollywood with Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) and as special as the film was for its fans across the borders, it also holds a special place in director-producer Karan’s heart – quite literally.
From saying love is friendship to empowering feelings of unrequited love, Karan came a long way and about that, he has said a piece of his heart actually rests in ADHM for exploring an “entire gamut of emotions.”
On October 28, the day that clocks six years of the romantic drama, Karan took to his Instagram with an emotional note while attaching a clip from the film that features a cameo of Shah Rukh Khan talking about unrequited love. “A piece of my own dil [heart] rests in this movie, exploring the entire gamut of emotions between love, friendship and of course – ek tarfaa pyaar [one-sided love]!”
Lauding the efforts of the ADHM team, Karan further added, “The cast, the team, the music – everything that resonated with the audiences across came straight down to talking to all the hearts. Six years on, it feels like it continues to speak to many and for that, I’m eternally grateful,” followed by a heart emoji. Fans flocked to the comment section to share how they first felt when they watched the film and their favourite scenes from it.
The same clip was shared from Dharma Productions’ Instagram page as well that described the film as an experience that “makes your dil [heart] feel a thousand emotions of ek tarfa pyaar ki taakat [the strength of unrequited love] heartbreak and the sukoon of unconditional dosti [the peace of unconditional friendship]!”
It is pertinent to note that Karan did not direct any film following the release of ADHM. The release of ADHM on its own was a struggle for him given how the political tensions between the two arch-rival countries affected the film with it starring not one but two Pakistani actors; Fawad in the lead and Imran Abbas in a smaller role. While Fawad wasn’t there for the film promotions, he played the role of an egoistic, heart-breaking DJ Ali in the film.
ADHM saw Anushka essaying Alizeh, an independent woman recovering from a breakup, and Ayan (Ranbir), a naive musician, meet in New York and form a bond so close that they’re inseparable–but it is all platonic. From there, the friends experience love, heartbreak and separation but at last, the joy of friendship.
Karan, known for giving Bollywood some of its most iconic films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna to name a few, is now all set to don the hat of director again with his upcoming project Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles.
