MULTAN:

The Fisheries Department of South Punjab has formulated a plan to provide fresh fish to citizens at special outlets.

Talking to the media, South Punjab Fisheries Director General Dr Zahid Sharif said three outlets were being set up in Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur.

He added, “The department is working to provide fresh and quality fish. For this purpose, modern fish outlets are being constructed where citizens can catch fish themselves. Not only will it offer recreation to the public, but also provide a high quality protein-rich diet to them.”

Dr Zahid stated that one fish outlet was operational in Bahawalpur, while work on the other outlets in Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan was ongoing. In Multan, a modern fish outlet was being introduced at the fisheries office, he added, maintaining that the modern outlet culture would help improve the consumption of protein-rich fish in the region.

“In Pakistan, fish consumption is very low, at only two kilogrammes per person annually,” he said. In coastal areas, people consume more fish in comparison to the citizens living inland, the DG highlighted.
