No progress could be made on the construction of multi-storey six parking plazas in Rawalpindi owing to political uncertainty and frequent shuffling in the Punjab government.
The construction of the multi-storey parking plazas in commercial centres was to begin in the year 2021-22 after approval by the Punjab government, but no funds could be released for the project. The delay in starting the project is likely to escalate the cost manifolds.
The parking plazas were to be built on modern lines with a collective construction cost of Rs4.6 billion. The parking lots had to be constructed for both cars and motorcycles with a modern system and they could generate heavy revenue for the Rawalpindi administration besides overcoming the issue of parking in the garrison city.
These six parking plazas were to be built at Katchehry Chowk, Old GTS Bus Stand, Jinnah Road, Fifth Road Commercial Market, Fawara Chowk, Raja Bazar and Bani Market, he said adding the process of acquiring land for five parking plazas had also been completed. These state-of-the-art multi-storey parking plazas were to have all facilities up to the sixth floor.
