Junaid Safdar denies report of arrest

Statement comes after a viral video showing him being taken in a police van in London

Junaid Safdar, grandson of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s debunked social media posts that claimed that he had been arrested arrested by Scotland Yard in London over fake degree, a media report said on Tuesday.

Junaid Safdar, son of Maryam Nawaz, issued the statement following a video making the rounds on the social media, showing him being taken in a police van in London. Safdar said that the video was old, taken in 2018.

“For those who have a short memory, this video is from 2018. I was arrested after responding in self-defence to an attack instigated by a group of PTI [Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf] goons who took no time in turning tail,” the report quoted him saying in the statement.

The incident Safdar was referring to, according to the report, took place on July 13, 2018, when Safdar and his cousin Zakaria Sharif were taken into custody by the London police after they reportedly got enraged and beat a man outside Avenfield House.

Debunking the fake news, Safdar said: “I am told that the journalist responsible for propagating this fake news has deleted his tweet, perhaps less out of moral considerations and more out of embarrassment. No apology or clarification was issued.”

Without mentioning any name in the statement, the grandson of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Quaid, said: “Must really be a man of grace and integrity. I have nothing more to say about his conduct.”
