Emerging actor Khushhal Khan is the new blue-eyed boy of Pakistan’s entertainment industry. Currently starring in the drama serial Wehshi, Khushhal has so far been part of Qissa Meherbano Ka and the telefilm Aik Hai Nigar. Since his debut in Midsummer Chaos last year, Khushhal seems to have spread his wings and does not appear to be slowing down.
In Wehshi, the actor plays Asif, a youngster displaying symptoms of various attachment disorders. His character is shown to have suffered neglect as a child and the trauma of that desertion leads him to develop a sense of deprivation growing up. In an interview with Urdu News, Khushhal opened up about his latest stint.
“In essence, Asif isn’t really a bad person. He doesn't intend to harm anyone but because he hasn’t received the kind of love and acceptance a child needs in its developing years, his trauma gets the best of him,” shared Khushhal. The actor assured that people like Asif, are in fact, looking for someone to cater to that void that has formed over years of negligence.
“Such people will give twisted replies to otherwise, harmless questions. But when met with love, when they see someone finally taking out the time to truly understand them, they will cherish this feeling and that person forever,” added the actor.
Khushhal confessed that after being roped in for Wehshi, he kept himself locked up inside his room for two weeks to prepare for the role. “I read my character in detail and annotated to ensure I was delivering everything it felt. I also discussed the role with our content head. But even then, I was so scared I wouldn’t be able to play this role onscreen.” Khushhal says that as much as he enjoyed locking himself away to prepare for the role, he would not advise others to do the same.
"I have a habit of not starting another project until one project is finished,” he continued, adding to his secret list of dos and don’ts that have gotten him so far. Acknowledging that there are actors out there who put on multiple hats at a time, Khushhal held that he would much rather put all his energy into one thing.
The artist, however, kept his character’s secrets to himself, “I can't say much about Asif, viewers will definitely see a change in him but I can’t say what that’ll be like.” In response to a question about the projects he’s done so far, Khushhal maintained that he is satisfied with every single one of them.
“I miss the sets of the drama serial Qissa Meherbano Ka a lot,” he admitted. “Now, with Wehshi, I am making new memories. Everything I’ve done so far has brought with itself a new set of experiences and I cherish them all.” The actor also revealed that before saying yes to anything, he discusses the script with his mother. “When a project comes to me, I first discuss it with my mother. She reads and tells me how she feels about the script. She never tells me if I should say yes or no, but since she watches a lot of dramas, she gives her opinion on the story.”
Khushhal, who has fancied being an actor since the age of 9, went on to detail how he maneuvered his way into showbiz while hailing from a family with no artistic pursuits. “No one in my family has ever been part of or in any way, connected to the entertainment industry. And I didn't have the money to get admission to an acting school. So, everything I know, I just learned on my own. I started with modelling and when an opportunity arrived, I auditioned to be an actor,” shared Khushhal.
The actor recalled auditioning for Qissa Meherbano Ka two to three times before finally landing the part. “I am also part of the film which is Popay ki Wedding currently in the post-production phase,” shared Khushhal. The upcoming entertainer is a romantic comedy which people will “hopefully like,” as per the youngster.
The summer of 2021 saw Pakistanis going gaga over a teen web series titled Midsummer Chaos. The coming-of-age story by Ahmed Sarym, set in Islamabad, became a guilty pleasure for many. But while the high school had not offered much substance, it tapped into the talent that we, the mainstream audience, were unaware of. And Khushhal Khan tops that list.
His acting debut landed him a Hum Style Award for Best Emerging Talent and since then, there has been no looking back for him. Not only did Khushhal manage to bag projects with bigwigs like Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed, Fawad Khan, Mawra Hocane and Saboor Aly, but he also worked hard on his craft and proved that he is more than just a pretty face with a “burger” accent.
