KARACHI:

A polio vaccinator taking part in the door-to-door inoculation drive on Tuesday was stabbed and critically injured by her ex-husband.

Stabbed once in the neck, Maryam, was rescued by a security guard of a factory who fired in the air and warned her ex-husband, Ghulam Nabi, to stop or he would shoot him.

This prevented the assailant from delivering another blow to the victim. Police said they received a distress call that a man had injured a woman with a sharp object near Madina Colony Powerhouse within the remits of Federal B Area Industrial Zone Police Station on Tuesday morning and fled. The injured woman was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), where she was identified as Maryam, 40. The victim has suffered a severe neck wound, SHO Muhammad Sarfaraz said adding police have collected the evidence and started searching for the accused.

He said that Maryam is a polio worker and as per initial investigation her ex-husband Ghulam Nabi injured her with a sharp object in an attempt to murder her.

Ghulam Nabi had divorced Maryam a few months ago. On Tuesday, the suspect stalked her and attacked her in front of the gate of a factory some distance away from her home, SHO Sarfaraz said.
