Heaps of garbage lying around roads in the city of Jhelum not only cause putrid smell and pollution, but have also started to block traffic on the main roads.
The citizens asked the Jhelum deputy commissioner to take notice of the situation. They said that the cleanliness situation has worsened in the adjacent areas, including the city. Garbage is piled up on the main roads, squares and streets, they said, adding that the municipal committee has failed to remove garbage on time. Due to accumulated rainwater, the rubbish heaps are giving off an unbearable stench.
Roads that have huge piles of garbage include Kachhari Road, Women's College, Kamila Road, Civil Line Road, Major Akram Shaheed Road, Bilal Town, Kala Gujran, Kashmir Colony and Rohtas Road. Garbage has started to spread from the designated places on the roads, intersections and streets.
A resident of Kashmir Colony named Asim Hussain said that the garbage is not disposed of for several days, which has exposed the inefficiency of the Municipal Committee's administration.
Healthy baby competition
Jhelum District Population Welfare Office organised a Healthy Baby Competition as part of the World Population Week the other day.
District Population Welfare Officer Babar Zaheer said that these competitions are being held to raise public awareness about the health issues of the mother and child with an emphasis on the importance of family planning. He added that at least three years of gap between two children is a must for the good health of the mother and child.
The officer said that breast milk is extremely important for a child's mental and physical development. Similarly, immunisation against dangerous illnesses and birth spacing are a must too.
The participants of the competitions and the winning children were awarded certificates, shields and gifts.
World Population Day is celebrated on July 11 across the world to create awareness about the issues concerning the global population. However, this year, in light of the Eidul Azha holidays, events in connection with World Population Day were organised from July 18 to July 22 in the district.
