RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) has topped the list of Pakistani medical universities that made it to the Times Higher Education (THE) impact rankings for the year 2022.

This is for the second consecutive year that the RMU has made it to the top-ranking university in Pakistan and the world at large.

Various departments of research and development have been set up in the university since it was elevated to the rank of the university.

Sources said that work on the first phase of the research lab complex worth Rs2 billion has been completed while two more research-related phases will be completed son. A plan to build a new state-of-the-art campus outside the city is also on the cards.

Recently, the Punjab search committee extended the tenure of the founder Vice-Chancellor of RMU Dr Muhammad Umar four years till July 2026. After the establishment of RMU, the infrastructure of the university was revamped in the first phase and a revised curriculum has been prepared for research development, human resources, medical education and postgraduate programmes.

Regarding patient care, specialized departments of gastroenterology, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, nephrology, dermatology and infectious diseases have been established.

RMU Vice-Chancellor Dr Umar said the education standard of the university has been recognised at the global level and Times Higher Education has given the university the first national ranking status for the second time in two years.

“The most important achievement in the university is the completion of the first phase of the university research lab complex. After the completion of two more phases, the research network in the university will become very wider, which is the need of today's medical education,” he said.

Dr Umar said that now, the establishment of a new campus outside the city was their main focus which has been made a part of the plan. He said that different programmes including quality control, master's in public health and master's in medical education were being started in the university.

He said that the university is also going to start many specialised programmes in various fields in the future. He said that the university has the most qualified teachers and a standard environment for learning and aims to achieve several stages of international ranking with the help of the most qualified doctors and a standard treatment system.
