SALU admin asks police to lodge FIR against professors

Varsity management claims faculty members hurled threats at dean of languages dept

KARACHI:

The administration of Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, has asked the local police to register an FIR against the faculty members of the varsity.

The SALU registrar, through a letter, requested police to investigate and then lodge FIR against teachers, including Dr Akhtiar Ali Ghumro, Dr Hisamuddin Shaikh, Dr Siraj Ahmed Soomro, Dr Mujeeb-ur-Rehman, Ahmed Ali Memon and three others for hurling threats to the dean of the faculty of languages.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, one of the faculty members said that a delegation of teachers held a meeting with Dean Faculty of Arts and Language Dr Ghulam Mustafa Mashori on Monday, requesting him to consider the experiences of research assistant.

"There was a harsh argument and hot words were exchanged during the meeting," the teacher said. "We also lodged a written complaint to the Vice Chancellor office but we have not been heard," he explained.

Meanwhile, in the statement issued by the university, it said that the professors used abusive language against the dean and threatened him to vacate his office immediately.

The core of argument was that the dean had opposed the agenda item for counting the experience of teaching assistants in the 84th Meeting of the Syndicate.

The university spokesperson maintained that all learned and respected Members of Syndicate are equal having right to express their point of view either for or against or even to submit their note of dissent, disagreement and observation as per rules of business of Syndicate enshrined in the University Act.

He said that it is tantamount to disgrace and humiliate the dignity of the learned member. He also said that SALU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto has expressed his dismay and sorrow over this situation created by a group of the teachers.

"This is first time the university approached police in its internal affairs," another professor told The Express Tribune. "Police involvement means to create unrest among faculty members," he commented. "It is an unbearable act and we will stage protest against this humiliating act of university," he added.
