Cop, lawbreaker killed in firefight
A police constable and a lawbreaker were killed in an exchange of fire in Swabi district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Friday.
Police told The Express Tribune that a police party was on a routine night patrol in Jalsai village when they spotted a man armed with an AK-47.
He was asked to surrender to police but he opened fire at constable Sajid Rehman who had tried to grab him.
Sajid died on the spot and the accused managed to escape taking full advantage of the narrow streets.
Sajid was rushed to the nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
“The man was identified and later police launched a door to door search operation to arrest him. He was surrounded and once again asked to surrender but he once again opened fire,” said a police official, adding that in the return fire the accused was killed.
The last rites of the slain policeman were offered in Swabi police lines with full guard of honour. Later the coffin was sent to his ancestral village for burial.
Constable Sajid Rehman was a resident of Asota village.
