KARACHI:

Orangi Town police have rescued an eight-year-old girl from the clutches of an abusive stepfather who regularly tortured the child at home.

Police have arrested the man, Javed, and the child's real mother, Nazia and booked them under relevant sections of law. Orangi Town police recovered the child from house number 558 in Orangi Town Sector 8B Data Nagar. Orangi Town SHO Atiq Afridi told The Express Tribune that the arrested stepfather had kept the girl in chains at home.

SHO Afridi said that neighbours alerted the police when they heard cries of the child.

Subsequently, a squad of Orangi Town police raided the house with police constables and whisked away the child while throwing her real mother and stepfather in the lockup.

Police quoting the neighbours said that Javed used to tell the neibourhood people that the child was mentally ill and therefore was kept chained so that she does not run away.

He further said that the rescued girl is mentally healthy and will be shifted to Women Police Station. He said that the arrested accused, Javed has four children of his own but he never hurts them. The accused used to torture the girl only because she was a stepchild. The arrested accused is a labourer by profession.
