Advocate general barred from appearance

Govt order comes a day before hearing about Hamza’s oath

LAHORE:

The Punjab government restrained Advocate General Ahmad Awais from appearing in courts on its behalf a day prior to proceedings related to Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz’s oath.

A larger bench of the Lahore High Court is scheduled to hear three intracourt appeals filed by the PTI against administration of oath to the chief minister.

The government had also told the advocate general to stop appearing before the courts earlier but he continued attending hearing.

Finally, the government stated in a letter, “You are directed not to appear in any court on behalf of the provincial government.

The Punjab government directed Additional Advocate General Jawad Yaqoob to dispose of the routine official business of the office of the province’s top law officer.

He will assign the cases to the law officers till the appointment of new advocate general.

The larger bench has taken up an appeal against a decision of LHC’s Justice Jawad Hassan, directing the National Assembly speaker to administer oath to the newly elected chief minister and two against Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti’s order urging the president to nominate anyone to administer the oath and advice to the governor to ensure administration of the oath.
