The retail price of chicken has gone up in the twin cities. In Islamabad, the price of live bird has increased by Rs100 per kg to Rs345, while the price of chicken meat has increased by Rs250 per kg to Rs580 per kg over the last 10 days.
Chicken has become out of reach for regular citizens. Chicken price in the open market has increased from Rs250 per kg to Rs580 per kg. A few days before Eid, the price of live bird was between Rs240 to Rs250, and the price of chicken meat was Rs380 to Rs400.
Chicken shop owners, Farhan, Talal, and Bilal, told The Express Tribune that prices have increased due to shortselling. They added that there is no possibility of further reduction in chicken prices for one or two more weeks. They said after 15 days maybe chicken will be sold at a regular price. Chicken meat in Rawalpindi's open market has reached Rs510 per kg, live birds are being sold at Rs340, and in suburban areas up to Rs350 per kg.

Citizens claim that even after Eidul Fitr, the cost of chicken meat has not decreased. They requested the authorities to take notice of the current situation and provide relief to the public.
