The Mauripur police on Sunday took into custody two watchmen of a Hawke's Bay hut for hiding facts and destroying the evidence regarding murder of a young woman four months ago.
T h e t w o m e n , Muhammad Wali and Abdul Wali, are accused of not informing the police about the incident, instead, burning the body of the victim and burying her remains.
Mauripur police station SHO Inspector Ayaz Jamali said that four months ago a man booked a hut on Hawke's Bay beach from the watchmen of the property.
The guards did not ask for any credentials name or phone number from the man who booked the hut and left the premises when he came with a young woman to spend the night.
However, when the two Walis came back in the morning, they found the man missing and woman's strangled body inside the hut. SHO Jamali said that as per Muhammad Wali and Abdul Wali they panicked and thought the police will blame them for the murder.
Therefore, they took the body to nearby Somar Goth, wrapped it in a blanket and set it on fire and buried the remains. He said that the watchmen committed serious negligence and carelessness. Besides the crime of not informing the police about the incident, they destroyed the evidence and also committed the crime of desecrating a human body.
"If the police had been informed at the time of the incident, the woman could have been identified immediately, but now three or four months have passed and it will be a long process of investigations and DNA tests. Jamali said police will submit an application to the concerned court for exhumation of the body to start the legal process of autopsy and identification.
He expressed dismay over the senselessness of the watchmen who know nothing about the prime suspect as he had booked the hut on a telephone call.
"They did not even bother to note his name address and take a CNIC copy or at least save the number from which he had called," the head of Mauripur police station said. However, police were investigating the incident further.
