‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’ trailer: Ranveer Singh's latest offers too much of the same

The social comedy sees the actor save his yet-to-be-born daughter from the tyrannous consequence of dynastic politics

The much-awaited trailer of Ranveer Singh-starrer, Jayeshbhai Jordaar is finally here and the only saving grace is Singh making a comeback in a comical Gujrati role again. The social comedy, which aims to echo the concept of gender equality in rural dynastic settings, tries too hard to emotionally connect with the modern wave of feminism and women empowerment. Although it delivers a much-needed commentary on a sensitive social issue, Divyang Thakkar’s directorial feels like a recycled 90s movie with some millennial relevant punchlines and character adjustments.

The three-minute clip begins with a panchayat in Gujarat where Boman Irani, the father of Jayesh (Singh), negates a girls' request of inebriated boys in the village catcalling them, putting the onus of being harassed on women. It is then pointed out through various scenes that the community is desperate for male heirs and condemn the birth of girls. In the said village, women stay grounded with guilt and responsibility, while misogynistic men call the shots.

Jayesh, being the woke messiah amongst the masses, when finds out that his wife and him are expecting a second daughter, takes it upon himself to do everything to save his unborn child – even castrating himself if need be. Tempers flare up and circumstances become dire when the men in the family find out the sex of the yet-to-be-born child.

Out of desperation and at a loss of choices, Shalini Pandey (Jayesh’s wife) asks him to leave her as she can't give him a son. Redefining heroism and masculinity, he replies that the male chromosome is actually responsible for the gender of the child and hence he is not a “man” in that regard.

In a conversation with ETimes, the Padmaavat actor was uber confident that the film will make the audiences cry. He holds his upcoming film in high regard and believes that his character will change the definition of heroism on the big screen. "It will make people laugh, cry, ponder and feel really, really warm when they see a feel-good film whose hero is the most innocent and honest person that you have met in a long, long time," said Singh. If only the hero could save a film.

The film also stars actor Ratna Pathak Shah in a lead role alongside Singh, Irani, and Pandey. Jayeshbhai Jordaar, which was scheduled to release in February, will now hit the screens on May 13.
