PESHAWAR:

Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) on Sunday hosted an ‘Informal Conversation on Pakistan Economy’ which was also attended by senior politician and former minister for Privatization Daniyal Aziz.

It was hosted by Dr Nadeemul Haque, Vice Chancellor PIDE. The session was attended online by a number of PIDE economists while many other members of the institute attended in-person, according to a statement issued by PIDE.

During the session, the issue of high inflation came under discussion in the conversation. The pros and cons of measures such as administrative controls, increasing interest rate and structural changes for long term inflation management were thoroughly discussed. Daniyal Aziz considered ‘inflation’ to be the biggest challenge for the new government.

He stated that regulating the monetary side instruments of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), in particular the interest rate, has been misused.

He began by using some statistics of the 2003-08 period which he termed as the basis of all current economic ills of the country. Daniyal was also critical of the rise in Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) in the same time period due to lack of impact it had in increasing production in the country.

In short, he termed the economy a bubble during these years and the bubble continues to hamper Pakistan even today. Furthermore, he opposed the government policies during the Covid-19-induced economic crisis through initiatives such as TERF etc.

Daniyal expressed that these schemes make the policy rate set by the SBP in the Monetary Policy ineffective as the schemes offer a much lower rate than the policy rate decided by SBP.

Daniyal Aziz was critical of SBP’s shortcomings in meeting the inflation target as set out by the ministry of finance on most of the occasions, and also suggested strict action against the SBP governor in future if this continues.

Lastly, Daniyal Aziz put forward the idea of a policy sensitivity analysis for both the fiscal policies and the monetary policies to better reflect the ground realities in PIDE’s policy suggestions to the government.

test | 2 years ago | Reply When there are more and more industries working inside Pakistan i can guarantee you inflation will be very very less compared to now but for now giving subsidy will also be a bad option because you are already having a massive trade deficit and there are also loans to be paid plus fiscal and current account deficit will put you deep in your trouble. You cannot control fiscal deficit trade deficit and current account deficit unless you do these in strict terms. Ban imports of lavish products for elite class be it smartphones cars bikes machinery and chemicals as well as textiles watches and branded this and branded that. Ban all the assembly plants in your country because the age of assembly is over. Countries were assembling cars bikes and every other machinery some 30-40 years ago but not now. So ban japanese chinese and european machines and disallow their import and allow strict manufacturing under industrial policy otherwise no import and also no assembling. Do privatization but make sure govt wins and the bid should be so much high otherwise it will mean you have kickbacks and commission. No Cokes No snacks No Fast Food. If there is any need of these edibles then they should be local. Foreign companies usually open factories in Pakistan and bring out a lot of revenue out of our country which should stay in our country. Go for protectionism. Strict control over money outflow. If you are a 4th or 5th world country. You need to think strictest and touch the final limits you can do to achieve economic stability. Manufacturing and Manufacturing but inside your country not into others country. Absolutely no to assembling and imports. Build everything from inside tell me the purpose of UET NUST GIKI PIEAS FAST PU LUMS. Do our students go there to learn how to fashion Parents pay the fees for their children so that there children could learn how to invent machines or how to innovate new technologies. But all they learn is fashion along with status that our student goes to this high level university or that level university. Ridiculous. And one thing never compromise on one thing and that is to manufacture everything you can inside your own country and not useless assembly.
