The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday disposed of a contempt of court petition against the Punjab government.
A division bench, headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan, heard a petition regarding the restoration of local government in the province.
During the hearing, the Punjab Advocate General Ahmad Awais Advocate apprised the court that the local government elections were being held in Punjab in phases.
He said that the Election Commission of Pakistan announced that the first phase of the polls would be held on May 29. Stressing that new elections were going to be held, he sought the dismissal of contempt proceedings.
He said that the provincial government did not deliberately delay this.
After his statement, the court dismissed the contempt petition against the Punjab government.
