Hindu girl shot dead over ‘marriage refusal

According to police, main accused who opened fire on the 18-year-old has been arrested

A young girl from the Hindu community was shot dead in Sukkur on Monday, drawing widespread condemnation from several quarters of the country. Pooja Kumari, 18, was targeted at her home near the Chhuahra Mandi area over her refusal to marry the accused. Station House Officer Bashir Jagirani told the media that the assailant, later identified as Wahid Bux Lashari and two of his aides, barged into Kumari's house and opened fire on her.

Lashari reportedly wanted to marry the girl but resorted to taking her life after the victim refused the same. Police registered a first information report (FIR) on the complaint of the teenager's father under Section 34 Section 302, and 337H(ii) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The law enforcement agency apprehended the main accused today and produced him in a local court, which remanded him into its custody for 10 days.

The brutal murder drew widespread condemnation on social media, as #JusticeforPooja began to trend. Social media users, in general, and renowned personalities, in particular, took to the online platform to express their anger over the incident. Sindh Minister for Minority Affairs Giyan Chand Israni taking stern notice of the incident has asked the Sukkur Zone DIG Tariq Abbas Qureshi.

Police informed the minster that they have arrested the culprit. Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) Chairman Mustafa Kamal condemning the heinous murder of Pooja Kumari said incidents like these are a source of embarrassment for the country.

Khawaja Saleem an activist for an inclusive society in his tweet deplored the slow response of the mainstream media and social media influencers over the incidence.
