At least seven terrorists were killed during a heavy exchange of fire after security forces launched an intelligence-based operation (IBO) on reports of their presence in Gorchop area of Balochistan’s Turbat district on Tuesday, military said.

Security forces conducted IBO today to apprehend ‘externally sponsored enemies of peace in Balochistan’, military’s media wing, the ISPR, said in a statement.

Once the troops started clearance operation in the area, the terrorists tried to escape from their camp and opened indiscriminate fire onto security forces, it said, adding that seven militants including Commanders Hasil Doda and Washdil were killed in ensuing heavy exchange of fire.

“These terrorists were involved in recent firing incidents and attacks on security forces in Makran Division,” the statement further added.

A ‘significant’ cache of arms and ammunition has also been recovered which was intended to be used in terrorist activities.

“Operations to eliminate such perpetrators of terrorist acts in Pakistan will continue and they will not be allowed to sabotage peace, stability and progress of Balochistan,” the military’s media wing maintained.

Regrouping of terrorist groups, the volatile situation in neighbouring Afghanistan and foreign support are key factors behind a new flare-up of violence in Balochistan, according to political and security analysts.

Terrorism has reared its head in the mineral-rich province as dozens of security personnel and terrorists have been killed in ambushes, clashes, and bomb blasts across the region in recent months.
