After six years of its release, actor Mawra Hocane’s Bollywood debut, Sanam Teri Kasam, is announced to get a sequel. The Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru directorial romantic drama featured Harshvardhan Rane in a lead role alongside Hocane. While Harshvardhan will be seen again as the romantic hero in the sequel, there are questions on who will replace the Qissa Meherbano Ka star in the upcoming sequel.
Rane confirmed the news on his Instagram with an official announcement for the sequel’s release. Sharing a video montage of snippets of news articles reporting about the sequel on his Instagram, the actor wrote, “Sanam Teri Kasam 2 in 2022. YOU made it happen, yes you!” with the hashtag STK2.
According to The Indian Express, the romantic drama will hit the big screens later this year around late September.
However, given the apparent political tension between India and Pakistan ever since the 2016 Uri Attacks, Hocane will not be starring in the sequel. The Indian government banned Pakistani artists in 2016 following the Uri Attacks. The filmmakers, however, have not yet revealed who will be essaying the character of Saru, originally played by Hocane, in the sequel now.
In a previous interview from the time of the movie’s release, filmmakers admitted that Hocane was “the perfect choice” for the film. Director Rao reportedly said, “It was great seeing a Muslim girl like Mawra playing the character of a Brahmin girl. She nailed the character.”
