Praises for Deepika, trolls for Ananya after ‘Gehraaiyan’ streamed

Revolving around the theme of infidelity, the film released on Amazon Prime Videos today

The much-awaited Shakun Batra directorial Gehraiyaan finally released on the popular streaming platform, Amazon Prime Videos, on February 11. In only a few hours after its release, not only is the film trending on Twitter but its stars are also on top of the charts – all for different reasons though.

Gehraiyaan, a film unfolding the complexity of human minds navigating through modern-day relationships, stars the Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone, and actors Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Pandey in a supposed love triangle.

There are mixed reactions about the film so far. For some it fit the “elite OTT film” criteria as it “justified its title efficiently” and is “an interesting romantic psychological drama”, while others were rather disappointed for it “justifying cheating” and for its poorly written “script and dialogues.”

With binaries of extreme reactions to the film, the lead female stars got invoked in a comparison as well. Fans and critics flocked to the micro-blogging site to sing praises for the Padmaavat star while trolling the Student Of The Year 2 starlet. For a user, Gehraaiyan “belonged to Deepika Padukone.” The film moved them so much that they think “it will take time [for them] to move on from it.”

Occupied from the aftertaste of heavy feelings the film devoured, a user sent her love for the Bajirao Mastani actor. Taking to Twitter, she wrote, “Deepika Padukone,when I say this. This is your career best performance. Incredibly proud of what you have pulled off.”

Another user felt that it was the “finest Bollywood work in recent times.” They’re of the opinion that the Piku star has “an award incoming” based on her “emotionally engaging” performance in the film. A user praised the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actor for her “striking on-screen chemistry with all three characters” in the film.

The last 30 minutes of the film were largely applauded by fans and even critics. Screengrabs from Padukone and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah’s conversation in the last scene made rounds on social media for resonating with viewers the most. A user even called it their “favourite scene” in the film.

While Padukone dominated the world of Gehraaiyan viewers, Pandey failed to meet the standards. A user took a jibe at her “bland” acting and tweeted, “Ananya Pandey reminds me of myself when in meetings. Not sure how to react or what to say.”

Another suggested that the director should’ve cast “Kalki Koechlin or Alia Bhatt” instead of the young starlet. 

gehraiyan was really, something. the story had potential but it felt quite rushed despite it being like 2.5 hours long. did not get to connect with any character at all & they could’ve done better with alia or kalki instead of ananya but well. refreshing watch but average overall
