EPA issues 399 notices to polluters in capital

ISLAMABAD:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued 399 legal notices to violators of the Environmental Protection Act in the federal capital during the last two years.

A total of 87 cases have been filed in the courts, including 25 in the Supreme Court, 39 in the High Court and 18 in the Environmental Protection Tribunal against the perpetrators. A fine of Rs19.1 million has been imposed on violators.

The EPA has also fined consumers of the banned polythene bags. The fines amounted to Rs2.8 million. The agency has since seized 3,500 kgs of plastic bags in the city.

The EPA has remained very active for the last two years in the federal capital against those who pollute the atmosphere. It has issued legal notices to industrial units, hospitals, mega development projects, smoke-emitting kilns and vendors violating the Environment Act.

During the last two years, 50 legal notices and 35 environmental protection orders were issued to industrial units across the city for violation of the act.

Around 105 legal noticed and 41 environmental protection orders were issued to the kilns. About 55 legal notices and 10 environmental protection orders were issued to the vendors and 18 fines were issued to the Capital Development Authority.
