Most of us have uttered curses that we would not wish to be made public. Locker-room chat that is acceptable with the boys is not something we would want repeated in front of our wives or mothers-in-law. But then again, most of us don’t propagate an air of piety, uttering gaalis whilst talking about verses from the Holy Scriptures. That is the galling hypocrisy of this unedifying incident. What really sticks in the throat is the man’s cynical disregard for the very same people he professes to love and care about. It was particularly odious to see him sniggering as a woman caller sought advice on the sensitive subject of the legality of suicide in the scenario of protecting a woman’s honour. The very same people who gave him his success are the very people his sniggering disrespects.
It’s fine to swear like a lafunga on a motorbike at Seaview. Less so if you have made millions projecting a holiness that has made you managing director of a television channel that broadcasts religious programmes and also a former minister of religious affairs — in effect, a powerful, rich and influential man.
So what does this religious man do when he’s caught being less than godly? Does he throw his hands up, apologise and confess his sins and ask for forgiveness? Hardly. No, the man with no shame instead compounded the mistake by brazenly lying to the people of Pakistan. Yes, the not-so-good doctor had the temerity to claim that this was all a trick of editing and dubbing. It wasn’t him speaking, singing or clapping his hands. He claimed it was a dastardly plot hatched by his former employers in revenge for the popularity of his Ramazan programmes. Carefully ignoring the fact that it was those very same former employers who hastily pulled the video from YouTube soon after the footage emerged. If you believe his assertion about the dubbing and editing you’ll believe anything — or, at least, that Pakistan’s poor cricket performance was dependent upon the colour of their shoes’ soles. Ah. And there lies the problem.
For me, the good ‘doctor’ has exuded as much sincerity as the president exudes incorruptibility. But this view is clearly in the minority. People love him. And after this revelation, they will continue to love and support him. They’ll believe whatever he tells them. Already, we are seeing people calling his show, supporting his falsehoods and consoling him.
This reaction exposes a deeper malaise in Pakistani society. As a people, we seem intrinsically drawn to egotists, narcissists and demagogues. We love the masala, drama and showboating these characters provide. Whether it is a Bhutto, a Zaid Hamid or an Aamir Liaquat, we look to these people for simple answers to complex problems. Preferring their demagoguery and simplistic solutions to the heavy lifting of using our own grey matter.
So we loved it when Bhutto tore up the papers and stormed out of the Security Council at the UN. We find Zaid Hamid irresistible when he’s blaming the Jews and Hindus for all of Pakistan’s ills. We trust Aamir Liaquat’s superstitious claptrap when he blames the Pakistani cricket team’s poor performance on the green colour of the soles of the team’s shoes. Where’s the empirical evidence, ‘Dr’ Liaquat? So it wasn’t due to poor coaching or match-fixing then? But the colour painted by some poor sweatshop kid in China?
Distrustful of reasoning and logic, we mindlessly follow these characters. They enrich themselves at the expense, as well as the naivety and gullibility, of the Pakistani population. My mother and aunts-in-law — good law-abiding people — would regularly unquestioningly regurgitate the nonsense spouted by these charades. Why? It was easier than searching for the truth, or — heaven forbid — thinking for themselves.
The reaction to Aamir Liaquat’s exposure also reveals another problem within the Pakistani society. We are a nation in denial. Even when faced with the truth about these unsavoury characters we are still unable to accept their faults. Like small children, we can’t accept the truth even when it’s staring us in the face. Pakistan can only resolve its problems when it’s able to accept some uncomfortable, unpalatable truths about its society. The supporters of Dr Aamir Liaquat are a manifestation of the fact that this will not happen anytime soon.
The exposure of Aamir Liaquat exposes some of the country’s inherent contradictions and character flaws. My friend, Nadeem Farooq Paracha, often says that the problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological. He has a point. We have developed a Stockholm syndrome with the egomaniacs on our screens. Falling in love with them rather than contemptuously rejecting them. And when they have been revealed to be phonies, we continue to delude ourselves into believing their bold faced lies. It is time we turned the alim online, off.
There’s an African proverb that states that ‘singing Hallejullah everywhere does not prove piety’. Remember that next time you hear ‘Assalamualekum warehmatullah’ from Hardilazeez Aamir Liaquat Hussain.

1stly it is not admirable to expose others. If you observe someone doing wrong you have to advise him, not to do wrong. But when the subject person do not admit his fault and stick with his bad habit. The second phase start, look at the situation if that person is a danger for society then you must tell others about the fault he had done. If he is not danger for society and do bad things only with you. Forgive him. But in this case I personally think Dr Aamir is not one amongst the muslim scholars (ulma) he is a so called scholar who do not know the accurate and true nature of Islam. I have met a few true muslim ulma or scholars that is why I come to know the difference between the aalim and so called aalim . One thing I must say a true aalim do not highlight himself because it is not allowed in Islam to highlight oneself. If someone highlight himself either he is not an aalim or he is not following Islam. SECONDLY I believe Pakistanis are best nation. But we as a nation need to think broadly. As a nation we are narrow minded and do not see and understand what we should see and understand. People like Aamir are not rare, you can see then on every corner of the street. These kind of people are leading us because we as a nation are not mature.
Do you know about Mukdaharn Province , Northern East of Thailand , nearby Khong River . in 1985 . If you have a cat when it died , what should you do for its funeral?
Bismillah,
Asssalam o alaikum wa rehmatullahi wa barakatahu,
Brother George, i'm so proud of you as a Muslim more than as a Pakistani only. Thoroughly loved your article. All i have for the Pakistani nation are duas that they stop looking at things as they appear (on face) and then believing in what they see as the only possibility but rather start to look deep and analyse matters......once we pick on the habbit of really looking into things it would broaden our views and understanding for our own good...
May Allah SWT grant us hikmah (wisdom), broaden our understanding, unite us as Muslims & as a nation & guide us to that which is the truth.....Aameen!
‘George’ you’ve made an excellent point albeit in the wrong direction. “As a people, we seem intrinsically drawn to egotists, narcissists and demagogues. We love the masala, drama and showboating these characters provide”
@Hira: all you have done is prove his point....General perception is that the so called Doctor has a huge female fan following and you have spoken like a true, die hard fan. So now please enlighten us about the great achievements of this man. What was it that he revealed about Islam that you and i had not learnt from our parents and grand parents. Yes what he did teach was hatred towards minorities. He also taught you that Islam discourages logic. he was very successful in telling you that it is OK to be two faced; keep a holier than though persona for the public and use the most "fohash" language off camera. If this was drawing room talk i would have no issues with his command over the swearing BUT he was preparing to deliver a show on Quran and Hadees for God's sake!!! Does that not deserve some reverence in your words and gestures???? And please i dont even want to get into the debate of whether this was a fake video or not! Really!!!
Brilliant article George! This is exactly the problem with Pakistan and its people, a nation in denial thanks to people like Zaid Hamid and 'Dr' Amir Liaqat. People of subcontinent are known in the World unfortunately for their slave mentality and finding a scapegoat for their problems :(
George, I was very saddened by your goodbye to Pakistan and it had disheartened me to read your previous article on that topic. Even though this article of yours talks about the flaws of Pakistani society, I do sense some ray of hope in this article as compared to the previous one. It is heart warming when you talk about Pakistanis as "we". I have also become a staunch follower of Dr. Atta ur Rehman, as his article "The Way Forward" talks about the reconstruction of Pakistan. The root cause for the problem that you identified in the Pakistani Society is that of education. As responsible civilians, I dont think we can just be at comfort by blaming the government and doing nothing ourselves. For this reconstruction, every person should use his maximum level of influence to bring about a positive change.
In this era of pessimism, I would suggest people of read the book "Islands of hope: Recollections of Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan" (http://www.vanguardbooks.com/browse.php?isbn=9789694025421&subject=), which really provides the spirit and vision to the people for a positive change.
To conclude this, I think in order to make things happen, our souls should be set on fire and we must struggle hard to find our long lost values and culture.
@D: I did not find this article offensive in the least. In fact, I liked it. Here's a guy who is not Pakistani by birth. He visited the country and chose to be there. He isn't the first person to leave Pakistan and he won't be the last either. Everybody comes to the land which they associate with at some point in their familial history. It could be recent or it could be centuries ago. What makes a difference to me is whether a person "owns" the land, and I think from the article it is clear that the author does. Also, like another poster said recounting a tradition of Ali (raziallah anhu), look at what is being said, rather than who is saying it.
It takes great confidence in one's own self to be able to take criticism and try to learn from it. It is a very small person and a very arrogant person who thinks that he deserves no criticism.
To fix a problem, first one must realize and accept that there is a problem.
@aicha: Actually I think this guy is not doing all this for directing the people the right way but it is for a different purpose... He has very well judged what the people in this region like and emotionally influenced with i-e speaking softly with some good collection of influential words on sharia't related topics. His instinct personality is something different but he is giving people what they like to see and listen. By this he gained accelerated fame and off-course good earning. There are many more doing the alike thing. The important point here again is that we need to think about a number of children(our country's future) devoid of getting education. Education is the thing that develops rational thinking in human and also better understanding. We the educated people don't beg in front of others b'coz we have confidence on our selves and self respect. Actually beggars know nothing about this thing. This is the answer to "how we can eradicate poverty". I really feel extremely bad when I see a number of children wandering on roads with sunken eyes and malnourished physique, in a country full of natural resources, Our beloved Pakistan. Here three things are important and will mean a lot: 1- Playing our role for the education 2- We need to try to be better on our own first and 3- Discourage any kind of corruption that we happen to see or listen.

@Ali Akbar Khan: mr khan please dont live in fools paradise. Face the reality. See the true faces of your so called scholars.
Why do I find that the best human beings are the ones that don't preach religion? Actions speak louder than words and the people who lead good lives are the ones who don't talk about it...
Very nicely stated. The Paki ppl are so far from there religion that they don't even know it. In Islam it is said that verify anything you hear before recommunicating it further, but not a single person does that. Like George said, not every person who says salams is a good guy. (but now don't look at secularism for answeres, that would be stupid too)
Why people made him God and then started hating him . he is just a human being like everyone.
salam Mr. george... my english is not very good so pardon me because there will be mistakes... just want to say that PAKISTAN does not has a psychological problem as far as reaction to aamir liaqat issue is concerned.. look at the %age of people who immediately expressed their hatred for him because of that video.. i was the only one among my university fellows who doubted that video, same reaction i observe in the people living near my home.... so based on that i say we know our standards of character based on our religion and if anyone does not follow them he is never appreciated WHOEVER HE MIGHT BE.... the real problem is believing the media propaganda without analyzing it fairly , and WESTERN people have this psychological problem at much higher level than PAKISTANIS e.g WE ARE GOING TO KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE IN IRAQ BECAUSE IRAQ HAS WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION SAID THE TERRORIST REGIME OF USA AND THEIR PEOPLE NEVER ASKED THEM DOES USA NOT HAVE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION WE HAVE ALREADY TRIED THEM ON HEROSHIMA , NAGASAKI, etc... on the contrary when US 's slave MUSHARRAF in PAKISTAN decided to help USA against innocent AFGHANS general public never supported his actions except only a few coward ones who thought saving yourself is better than saving morality.. and they forgot that people die but morality lives ...
George,u have done a superb job n in a long time i reallly enjoyed reading an article. Mr Doctor had always looked and sounded fake,n a few people i personally know who have attended his shows have actually witnessed such behaviour... I salute you for writing such a daring ariticle.
George has hit the nail on the head but I don’t agree with his notion about Zaid Hamid. Zaid gets carried away sometimes but we can’t be ‘in denial’ of certain truths he has been pointing at….it is very very wrong to keep Zaid Hamid in the same bracket as Aamir Liaquat....Aamir Liaquat is a phony & the way he conducted a program in a graveyard on 15th Shabaan last month with his audience all around & full lights on was sufficient to tell anyone about his credibility (plus his many other antics over the last few years)....
Sir, I support what you just said, but I don't think that people will continue to support him. At least not those who have seen him XPOSED. the callers who are calling him n consoling him are phoney, i think.
One thing that we all have ignored that this fraudster Aamir Liaquat has also insulted highly esteemed Muslim Scholars, Ibn Taymiyyah and Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab in this video.Let us stand against him and boycott his shows.
a sad reality of our society!
@Mrs Noreen Bilgrami: I would like to say something with respect: "Only who hasn’t done any sin or gunah can point at others."... If we follow this as a rule, there won't be anyone to point out some realities that we generally skip. If one is sinful, should he not get up and spread about the political leaders' corruption so that people could bring better leaders for their country? Sometimes we need a wakeup call (from whoever it is) to get out of our small world & realize the truth. By our small world, I mean we start believing in things that are presented to us and we accept them without any research. "...cause u make hope go away from lots of crying people in Pakistan."... The problem is it's a false hope, and false hope is actually denial. People need to know the truth so that they realize that "eeman" is not something to be thrown away to some man (aalim, religious scholar, wali-u-Allah).
@Fah: I'm Pakistani & we Pakistanis are not used to being treated politely, really, and we don't generally take care about being polite and not being rough. That's why we don't find this obvious... using a "we" tone is a polite way of delivering a message. Using "you" tone is sometimes rude. So using "we" is not an issue. Don't mean offence at all.
you can find any logic for the thing u like!
Great article! A society can only develop when there are critics like you to point out it's weaknesses. I just don't understand what is this man still doing on television. Preparing to lead another bunch of blind followers astray? Honestly, HE is the one who looks like one of the followers of the 'Dajjal' he keeps warning us about on his shows.
@Fah: and others who blatantly point out who has left the country and who hasnt!.. Any body and everybody with reasources will leave the country to save thier own and thier family's lives. To live normally for once without being scared of getting blown up all the time. Most of all may I remind all those against immigration that the Prophet ( PBUH) left his hometown as well to save his life as well as his followers. In my view, it is also a sunnah. Kindly let those who are studying (another form of jihad) and those who chose to leave the country in search of employment or safety for thier family, keep a link with the country!
Well done George! And apologies for the racist comments by some Pakistanis who cannot see past their blinkered racist, hyper-nationalist, uber-Islamist, nutty conspiricist views...
I pray that Pakistanis wake up to reality fast
George, you have spotted our nation's problems in the few years that you lived here. Alas, we could not, spending our whole lives in this country. Well done, way to go, we love you..........
Well all is fine but why Bhutto sir, i guess everybody knows here why he tore the papers in security council, he was the only brave man in the Pakistan history to stand in front of the western Politicians, he was the brainchild behind the OIC and our Nuclear Program, I respect him but not the current Peoples Party.
And for Bangladesh Please do search the Bangladesh Partition Movements you will find quite many of them one major was 'Mukti bahini' which was funded by India.
They too wanted not be a part of Pakistan sir, we only gave them a reason.
@Frank: Sorry but yes you are alone in your offense of the above.
@GF: Not that I have ever paid much attention to the concerned person except for fleeting glances on random TV's, I did see the video and to be honest was not really surprised. No eyebrows were raised here. This sort of street language is used by many and not a day goes by when I do not hear such profanity on the streets of Pakistan. The animated, theatrical mannerisms of this person convinced me there was more than meets the eye and hence he remained banished from the TV's within my walls. If I want to know anything about my own religion, I can pick up the Book and read about it myself instead of relying on the testimony and guidance of some self touted scholar. I am more than capable of drawing my own conclusions rather than to continue seeking guidance about my own religion from someone with questionable authority on the same. Yes Pakistani people are gullible, living in a constant state of denial and will get offended at the drop of a hat, as proved by 'Frank' above. Getting offended is the norm in Pakistan. As a matter of fact "I hope you will not get offended" is a common phrase used in Pakistan (in Urdu of course) before one person addresses another which led me to ask myself whether we Pakistani's are so insecure and riddled with complexities that we're ready to take offence over anything that does not glorify us? Sadly it seems so and its even more ironic that it needed a non-Pakistani to point that out because I doubt any Pakistani would go to such lengths as to air these opinions in a publication. At the same time, I would also say that Pakistan has got to be the most diverse nation on this planet because you are witness to constant conflicting identities and ethnicity's. Pakistan is not about one nation, one people, one language and the reason for that is self explanatory. The day Pakistani people start trusting their own wisdom and judgement and cease to rely on and crave the words and guidance of self appointed touts in the position of power and influence, including but not limited to a media that thrives on sensationalism, that is when you will see peace, progress, prosperity and development. We need to think for ourselves and not let others think for us.
The problems are much deeper than what we would like to believe. I know from the people I meet that the "dear doctor" has lost a vast majority of his followers after this tape and has been widely disgraced but then, there still are many who suffer from the 'Stockholm syndrome'. But sadly, you cant completely blame the captive for his/her condition, developed during the captivity of over 64 years.
He is a 'tamashbeen; So called doctor with a fake degree. He should be prosecuted
Read this as well: http://www.aamirliaquat.com/entries/Show/88-Must
A beautifully written article sir. I agree with you 100%. Please do ignore some people who hold the color of your skin or your origins rather than logic as a means to disagree with your analysis.
We've known about the good doctor's hyporcrisy for a while now. The kind of womanly colored clothes he used to wear in the National Assembly during Musharraf's years and then come on television in condemnation of men dressed as women is proof of that.
While I do believe editing and dubbing software have reached their zenith, it is hard for me to comprehend his 'halleluja-istic' dances, singing along on an Indian tune with a mullah sitting next to him, abusing on air, or even insulting the 'Maulana sahib' for terming a legitimate question about suicide being permitted to save a woman's honor as 'delicate' can be termed as post-production masterclass. For if that were the case, the next Special Effects Oscar must go to whoever has a beef with the good doctor.
@Fah: lol Seriously? You're gonna call out one man, of the million others globally, for leaving Pakistan for his own sanity and future? I'm sure you, yourself, living in Doha still call yourself Pakistani or wherever you're from... Just because we are forced to make time-appropriate life choices doesn't dissociate us from our roots. Shame on you and many others who think that way. But I guess I'm being too harsh on you. I'm sure many others share your sentiment about George's departure from Pakistan after 9 years.
FYI though - It was Pakistan who failed and denied this man (along with MANY of us Pakistanis) the right to dream about a hopeful, stable, corruption-free, liberal Pakistan.
Well, said, George. Couldn't have written this more objectively. It's all in the facts. Facts, Pakistan. Facts.
George has explained this pakistani culture of ours in a very polite yet descriptive way. we as a nation must think what we are doing . Supporting a person who has violated Quran , disrespected a caller, and four guests in different programmes is more shocking and sad than the Dr s own sin. I agree with georges point of view that our society in general has a malaise which must be sorted out first if Pakistan has any chance of making a comeback as a nation in this century .
@Fah: I am surprised u pointed this out. It seems like some ppl believe that if your life is in trouble, you stick to your ground until a bullet is passed through your brain to have the rest of the people remember you in symphathy. George made the right decision in leaving and has all the right to atleast himself WE. Many of us leave and never look back, here you see a person not just looking back but trying to knock some sense in us pakistani's and in return we as usual try to create and manifest differences. Well done Fah
@Frank:
You just may be. It is a blog...his own opinion. If you disagree with it, write a rebuttal. And this Englishman has pinpointed a vital flaw in our nation's psyche. Instead of crucifying him for his nationality, understand that he thinks of himself as part of our nation. He points out the flaw for our improvement.
Seconding Sajawal Javaid
What he said was a hundred percent correct and I salute this man for caring enough about Pakistan to express his opinions and concern in the way he did.
A news flash from "The Daily Cosmos"
"Lucifer resigns, declares mission accomplished after viewing "Dr." Liaquat's video."
"Radio Cosmos" reports:
"Lucifer's resignation involuntary, he is being replaced by a Doctor who specializes in deviousness and demonology."
Situation quite cloudy, awaiting further details.
Will update as soon as further details emerge.
Truth .. Nothing but the truth ... Thats what I like
@faizan akram:
Ah..so touching :(
One must admit though that he is quite talented and no one should be surprised if he is the one thumbing his nose at Pakistanis as Hanuman (or Rawan) in Bollywood production of Ramayan and laughing his way to the bank! Like any astute businessman, he must be looking for the "Openings." Who knows!!!
In response to the 6th comment down by Fah: you can take George out of Pakistan, but you can't take the Pakistan out of George. For sure when you live in another country for 8 or so years, you must have a little piece of that place in your heart.
Very well written piece.
"FAKE VEDIO".....people who say this make me more disgusted than actually watching this video. When are we going to wake up and stand against these hypocrites. When is ARY going to kick him out of the channel too? And shame on all the mullahs who are laughing with him in this video. His future is probably as a second rated play back singer in some failed pakistani film where he can at least fullfill his love for singing or may be acting.
@Shehryar: Just how can you edit those clapping signs and fist movements?? I am still doubtful if such technology exists.
@SaiyidaTasmeera:
"There's a sucker born every minute." P T Barnum (Allegedly) Times have changed. Now it is "There's a boatload of suckers borne every minute."
@saba: It is matter of FAITH. In fight between FAITH and FACT; Faith always wins. "Doctor" Liaqut's spiritually sick "patients" have absolute faith in the voodoo he practices.
@mind control:
Shooting the messenger are we? Or burying the head in the sand! Or Emperor's (Liaquat) new cloths are truly dazzling?
okay fine we believe upon u........... but what abt all the murder cases in which aamir is involved????????
I agree that those clips are real, and his language was highly inappropriate, but what on earth were people expecting him to be? An angel? Just because a person preaches about Islam, that doesn't necessarily make him/her pious. People in Pakistan tend to have very rigid expectations of the people that they start to idolize, and they forget that the people whom they adore are after all ...human. I am not his fan, but over the years, I have watched his shows during Ramadan, and I have never seen him proclaim that he was sinless. It is us, who want people to be absolutely pure and devoid of anything wrong, and when reality sets in, we are just too immature to handle it. The exploiters of this situation do realize that common psyche of Pakistanis: high expectations of virtuosity. We all have different faces in different places; at home, at work, with friends, we all tend to be different, and can't be the same throughout, and the same goes for Dr. Amir Liaquat.
I also can't help noticing that no one has anything to say for the people who exposed him. Islam only allows exposure of another person's sins if he/she is harming others or usurping other people' rights. In fact, Islam prohibits slander or any unnecessary exposure of other people's misdeeds, even in the form of gossiping or backbiting. I don't understand what success did the group or organization achieve by exposing what he used to say off air. My question is: if that particular organization was so bent on revealing the truth, why didn't this happen before he joined ARY? Why weren't these videos clips "leaked" whilst he was still on Geo? One plus one equals two: does that ring a bell? The answer is that his show is hugely successful nowadays, but some organizations just can't see others doing better than them.
George, you are talking to the wrong audience here. Creatures like Amir Liaqat are parasites who prey on illiterate souls most of who cant even write their name in Urdu lest read an English article. His followers do not have access to internet and if by any chance they get to see his juggling and antics then it is thrown off as a Hindu-Zionist propaganda. Excellently written but I am afraid that this would just be filed away in archives and the great Doctor would keep his deceiving games for many years to come. This is a nation diagnosed with a fatal cancerous tumor and no one at this stage has the time or the dedication to take the patient for a high dosage of Chemotherapy.
GEO tv is equally responsible of maligning islam by keeping this culprit with them even after knowing this attitude by that street smart lafanga.......
@Frank: Would it help if same comments were made by a Muslim sounding person, living in Pakistan? Facts, I would imagine, should be facts no matter who brought them to light. I hope you are familiar with the expression, "Do not kill the messenger."
George i just wish that he should be brought to justice for trying to make fool of his country men time and again......he would have been a lesser evil had he confessed and would have come clean.
George you highlighted one really grave problem people of this country are facing, that is the Blind-Faith! Whether it is politics or religion we have narrowed our minds so much that when we try to break the walls we have built around us we hesitate! its time for us to decide whether to continue strengthening these walls or to put some effort to break them! Need of time is a FREE MIND!!!!
@ayesha: Very well said Ayesha. Anyone who is a bit of mind (working one) wouldn't get trapped by these characters but you will be surprised by finding some of the educated (probably half literate or mal-educated) who are still supporting this man. Pakistan has too much of the unimaginable stuff in the society and it will be unfair to just call them nation in denial or psychopaths - these terminologies can't define the extent of mess we are in. We will have to get rid of the corrupts (of all sorts , not just govt) before its too late, by bringing in power the people who can fulfill the definition of a leader. cheers
@Mrs Noreen Bilgrami: Did u not have any other way of finding the truth and getting closer to Allah?. I appreciate that u have come closer to Allah and Allah give u strength but I disagree with you, we must not avoid pointing our fingers to others if we think they are sickening the society and playing with people's emotions. We do not need to be sin less for doing a little good. I feel sorry for u for appraising such a big drama baaz and characterless person - God bless you. We know that he is a drama and I am shocked to see an educated person favoring such a dark and double faced person. If u want to know more about his character, please write an e-mail and I will reply in detail - its not nice to mention everything here. Such people are called islam sellers - they use religion for their personal and wordly gains, fame, power, money etc. Please do not preach to others to follow these characters. He does not earn anything good in any night- I am sure, don't be so ignorant for God sake.
@Ali Akbar Khan....Mosad and CIA....OH MY GOD...when are we going to wake up and stop blaming others for our problems. We all know that the video was real. I was not at all surprised though...religious evangelists are the same all over the world. Be it Amir Liaqat or the child rapist Christian priests.
ayesha - you are 100% right.
Bewildered Bilal
George
You and I often disagree on a lot of things you write. This isn't one of those occasions. The sad part is that there are still those who blindly profess their faith in herr Doctor on the claims that "someone who gets countless to read the durood in every program can't be wrong". And these aren't people in some remote village mind you. They are well educated businessmen who frequent the same circles you might have during your stay in Pakistan. And it is because of these fans that Amir Liaquat continues to survive this and continues to fool the people of Pakistan.
-Aly
ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt Thankyou George. You have done a great service by exposig this sanctamonious and oleagenous blackguard .Going back a bit, isn't he the one,who when questioned about his false doctorate by Imran Khan, answered by bringing up Sita White!
t
I agree with each single word you said in ur article
can we get over it...plz!
Awesome read!
very well written thoughts !
Brilliantly written article, this is exactly how i feel.
I so agree with everything you wrote..We never try to use our own mind n mostly follow someone so blindly that in end we cannot make decisions for ourselves..We as a country do have to accept some bitter truths as that is the only way we would be able to move forward.Instead of believing in everything Some person says just becuase he or she is famous, powerful or self proclaimed "good muslim" is the downfall of our society. It`s about time we start making decisions ourselves n stop being someone without half a brain.
Excellent article...... true actual problem of Pakistani people is non availability of correct knowledge & awareness and arer psychological influenced .
thumbs up George, most of us have this syndrome, we don't accept things on a right time.....
No one can claim to be perfect, We are Human beings, not angels. As per quotation of Hazrat Ali(A.S), we should see what is being said, not who is saying. The statement of George that "It is time we turned the alim online, off" is meeningfull!. Please think over it.
George, Very well said. Pakistan was founded by a foreigner (Jinnah) and can only be saved by another foreigner (GF) :-). I agree with you hundred per cent. We love to believe pirs and all the other men who can play magic tricks and never believe in anything practical. Every Pakistani 's dream job is that he never has to show up for a job and he gets a check at home every month. Even the most religious kind would find no conflict in this. This would be considered a special blessing from Allah instead being castigated for earning haram rizeq. For a society to change it needs to self reflect and change. We have leaders and religious leaders all playing their roles as any actor would do. The only difference actors at least believe in their role while they are playing it. Here the joy is in fooling the public. Amir is just another person with the same values and the same kind of personality embodied by every religious and political leader in Pakistan.
The very damning and persistent accusation about this man Liaquat without a single word of doubt about his videos, gives the reader the impression..It's one sided. and partial. This article seems to have been written with a lot of anger.
While I only recently heard about this person and maybe there is some truth to the accusations about him or may be not.The question is, who really benefits and gains by all these accusations against him.Whom has Mr Liaqat annoyed and angered?
If his detractors really have something to prove,GO TO THE COURTS. and PROVE IT.
I am not defending this person nor am I accusing him, till it's proved beyond a reasonable doubt by the courts.
Dear George,
Your blog is truly remarkable. It surely addresses our society's main problem i.e. self denial. Actually the problem with our society is, there is too much to suffer for and just to cut down on the sufferings list, we think of 'Better denying & staying happy than accepting & being sad'. This doctor's originality has always been questioned by grown-up critiques but I kind of disagree with you where you take Zahid Hamid's name in the same lot. I do not know much & can not say much but i think its better not to point our finger at anybody without a solid proof. Rest; everything lies between man & his creator.
In a way our self denial shows we, as a nation, think positively. This is my perception. If we start absorbing a lot of negativity on daily basis (which sure is possible living there), I think half of us would be mentally & physically crippled. So yes, sometimes self denial is a remedy, not a disease.
I hope & pray that my country is soon blessed with ever-green peace & prosperity, Ameen.
Regards, Saeeda

Well said! The so called 'doctor' is a cheat and a fake to boot!
Article: Nicely written. I can only smell sincerity in writers thought. Lets all stop calling Dr. Aamir as Aamir, because he doesn't have a doctorate degree (credibility is at stake and he is not budging to comment) For the callers still calling and with him - u never know they may be fake too ... paid to call and scripted to talk. Hadith is beautiful ... explains a lot and makes all the sense. GeoTv - well what could they have done ... they are just a private channel doing their business ... and this by no way comes under the pretext of a socially degraded thing in the society we live in. On part of AL ... i am confused ... he has a job and he is doing well when it comes to talking about issues ... (non controversial ones of course) ... and i think he was doing a good job in terms of educating the uneducated. He had a certain class of followers and lets assume for a minute that he is just another person and doing his job. Why should we judge him on how he talks and behaves behind camera? Is that really a matter of concern. However, one thing was totally un acceptable and that was laughing at the question that lady asked ... now thats un professional ... :S Bottom line - he needs to be thrown out of this job!
Well, it is yet to be proved that the phone calls he receives are real calls made by real fans/followers. We can hear Dr. Aamir in the footage making a pun at the reality of Ullemas to whom the phone calls are made in order to get relevant insight into grave religious matters. If having fake Ullemas sitting in the same studio can be made a part of the "show", why is it not possible to have fake callers reciting from the scripts that were handed over to them for the sake of Dr. Aamir's face saving game? It is surely too much to assume that the entire Pakistani nation is a blind follower of TV evangelists like Aamir Liaqat Hussain solely on the basis of the phone calls that he receives everyday. As an observer, I see people having sudden disgust for the so called doctor, not merely for the abusing and swearing (which ofcourse was offensive in its own way) but for the dearth of respect and seriousness that was so prominent in his speech while talking to the Ullema offline. We, as Pakistanis, are anything but blind, Mr. Fulton, and need not be reminded by an Anglo-American/ Pure-American (whoever) as to where we are going wrong and for what reason. thank you for your concern.

George, I have been seeing videos of Aamir liaquat and following his replies on twitter & FB for a couple of days now. I have seen people’s reaction varying from the angry to the defensive, from confrontational to abusive and predictably as the butt of many jokes in the country. But I am not laughing; I am ashamed!
First point to clear: I am not defending or arguing the fact that what Aamir Liaquat did or does is not extremely hypocritical, nor am I refuting the fact that most of the people prefer to live in denial even if they are staring truth in the face and delude themselves with fantasy and lies. But can you honestly say that it’s a predicament that only Pakistanis find themselves in. Isn’t the whole world, including the people in the first world, prone to the same ignorance syndrome? Have you forgotten how the hypocritical Bill Clinton fell from grace and still wasn’t impeached after being proven to have lied in court about his affair with the aide? Wasn’t that clear grounds for perjury? Ironically the iron-lady, Hilary Clinton, stood beside her Casanova Husband cum President and he left office with highest of the end-term approval ratings for a President of USA. If that’s not delusional what is! And don’t even make me start on the British delusions. Royal Family and their host of scandals are fodder for the world press. The point I want to highlight is people all over the world are the same; they mostly live on what is fed to them, be it truth or lies but mostly lies.
So who is the real culprit? The people who made what Amir Liaqut is today to the people. The ones who promoted a wrongful image of a person while having full knowledge about his hypocrisy. And still go on promoting him. The questions need not be addressed to Amir Liaqut. The questions need to be addressed to the forces behind the false personality that was created and sold to the poor misguided people. Why didn’t the management of Geo question him while he abused the Mullahs or the staff there? Why didn’t they penalize him when he uttered curses while talking about the Holy Scriptures? I won’t blame the personality. I would blame the people who projected him, all the while knowing of his hypocrisy as an Alim and I will continue blaming ARY, who still let him come on air and justify himself; he has worked with them for quite some time now, I am sure they also have some footage to exploit when he leaves them.
As we all know a hypocrite never changes and I am sure he still curses and makes fun of guests and sensitive questions in shows for the channel, but they will hold peace until he leaves and then they can also make fun of our people looking for some answers from these esteemed scholars of the greatest religion in the world. And I would also lay the blame on these scholars, who after knowing about the antics of this pseudo-alim, kept on giving repeat appearances on his show and helped cement his image as a saint amongst the people. Shouldn’t they be upholding the sanctity of Islam and everything it holds holy? And last of all, where were you when all this was happening? You are a very intelligent man and I am sure that with your journalistic background and your association with GEO, you must have known about this hypocrite for a long time now. Why didn’t you or others in the media industry rip the blinders off people’s eyes and reveal the truth about this menace? And if you think that GEO very conveniently pulled off the video after leaking, then you have forgotten the evils of Internet these days. Being very shrewd players, they made sure it spread like wildfire and would have been downloaded a million times before pulling it off the internet. The media today itself is a menace. Spreading hatred and inciting rage will only result in more angry people wasting time and energy over arguments that both sides won’t even pause to consider. I am sure most of the people commenting on your posts are evangelists writing for GEO, ARY or Mr. Aamir Liaquat himself.
It’s very irresponsible of the media for exploiting religion and emotions of people. Whoever Aamir liaquat is and whatever he does shouldn’t have been made public; it only results in creating a bigger divide and inciting people into arguing and wasting their time in endless debates with no results. Above all, it takes our faith away from all Religious scholars and the teaching they give of our religion. A simple and effective solution would have been a total blacklisting of Aamir liaquat from all media channels many years ago. But would our greedy and power hungry media channels put their morals above money? If this had been a politician, cricketer or Meera for that matter, our media would have quickly jumped on the moral bandwagon. But failed to do so in the greed of high ARPU’s and still continues with their pointless and destructive articles and news all around. This matter should be buried along with Mr. Aamir Laiquat for good and GEO, ARY and the rest of the media should accept their mistakes and apologize to the people of Pakistan.
They should also make sure that if any other Mr. Aamir liaquat exists among them, make sure to pick him and put him to right to avoid another such sorry episode in the future.
If Nadeem Farooq Paracha would have said to me that, problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological, I would have replied I agree they are Psychological and highly inclined to the Ethical aspect of it. Our powerful media, being the representatives of our people, should respect and keep the best interest of Pakistanis above everything else; moral, ethical, social, psychological or otherwise. Then again, the media should develop some morals and ethics before addressing any other evil in Pakistan. At times hiding or eliminating evil is better than Exposing!
I apologize if I have offended anyone. My intentions are true at heart and hold the best interest for everyone.
Son of soil, Harris Rasheed.
well said George.
Denial, escape or depression overload, whatever it is, its deep down to our roots, its exactly what George referred to, a psychological dilemma within the individuals about what to want and who to love. Lurking around standing in the middle of nowhere, we all so desperately want to cling to some who hasn't broken our trust. There is no stamina left, nobody has anything to lose anymore, so the best deal turns out to be the idealization leading to idolization. At least there is some false self-respect inside our personal stone walls. The biggest problem in our society is; there is no problem at all when we stand in front of the mirror. Yet our favourite sport is always on: the blame game. Great article George, keep it up.
@Shehryar: only God can help you if u think the tape was fake.
@JD
how many among us would not swear or use the dirtiest language on a given day?
Yes on a given day , in fact on most days, probably all of us would swear. But would all of us also claim on the next day that it is a sophisticated conspiracy, and that those who take the name of the Rasool are incapable of swearing. And how many of us would find rape and suicide funny? Now this amounts to a certifiable psychological problem.
Hard to speak truth, right?
Yes, as explained above, it is really hard for the Dr to speak the truth, whether about his PhD or his swearing and talking sleaze.
This man does not deserve the pedestal you are trying to hoist him on. Get over it.
i m amazed how pEOplE through stones on someone else, and still say that they are MUSLIMS. muslim is one who cant harm ne1... NE1 means ne1
We r not supposed to judge anyone with a video which everyone knows could be fake.
neither i m a follower of Dr amir liquat nor MR George(MR JUGDE for whole Pakistan ) but i need to say we should nt be so jugdmental ,
we should consider that we all are human beings and we all commit mistakes, and :@george( by not defending dr AMIR) a molana ,a priest or a religious person should also be considered as a Human being .
blaming someone on a sin which he didnt do is A biggest sin which i think most of us has committed that is the biggest problem in Pakistan ..
dont forward unconfirmed knowledge specially about Pakistani "human beings"
i would love to see an article BY mr GEORGE about the postive efects By ACTual ISlam around the globe or IN PAkistan or ne thing which could highlight some positivities by Some religious muslim scholars..
bulleh shah said
tear down the temples tear down the mosque but dont break the hearts of ppl becz GOD lives in it
I'm surprised not with Aamir Liquat exposition, but from the fact that we could not find any single suitable person for this very important and sensitive job and remained dependent on acting of an "actor" for a very very long time.
Did this clip shock everyone? Some are labeling it as 'disgusting', 'pathetic', 'eye opener' and bla bla bla. And Farooq Piracha concludes that problem with Pakistanis is psychological, not political, economic or social. Wah. I do not agree and do not want to indulge myself in this debate but let me ask one simple question: how many among us would not swear or use the dirtiest language on a given day? 1% or may be less? Hard to speak truth, right? and mind you, this includes all of us, most of our anchorpersons, journalists etc, and still you say that the problem is psychological, not social. Good analysis.
Brilliant piece George! Can you post your Twitter handle so that I can follow you there?
Thanks,
Best wishes, Kashif
Dear George, your article is an eye opener for most of us. I think it is time to get into a discourse over the effects, the media is having on our lives. Being Hippocratic is one of the many evils that we are facing today and media claims to be innocent by saying it shows the true picture of the society. But one should think isn’t the media dictating us to think about issues as they like us to think. The media today is highly profit oriented and tries to give simplistic answers to complex issues. Receiving maximum number of phone calls and messages on live shows are the only criteria for a channel to know about a program’s success. But what about the issue of responsibility towards the society? Our viewers are limited to a set of programs repeated on every channel and the viewers are undergoing a normalizing effect. Values of people are changing and satisfaction of mans lower nature is given more importance. The mentioned program is one of the examples of the effect of media on innocent people. It is time for all of us to analyze the content to what we see and don’t believe to what is shown or said..
@Fah: Just because some one has left the country doesnt mean they dont care and love the place. Lets pls not be kuwain ka maindak!
i agree with whatever you wrote! its exactly because of two faced people like the "good" doctor here that we continue to fall into the abyss of darkness! SHAME ON HIM for fooling so many people who truly and sincerely believe him to be a God abiding man! wake up Pakistan its still not too late!
@Frank: Yes dear you are alone. If someone tells you your wrongs on your face, he is your best friend....I really like his tone and massage.
Why is everyone behaving as if he killed someone or is morally corrupted. I am not a big fan of Dr. Aamir Liaqut but lets put things straight a - he is an ANCHOR PERSON, i dont remember him claiming to be pious or an islamic scholar. B - have "WE" never used foul language. All of us need to look at ourselves also and stop trying to find fault in others all the time. All of us have preached stuff that we do not fully follow does that mean we should stop telling someone something good. I dont pray 5 times a day but does that mean i should not tell anyone else to pray ??? Pakistan has bigger issues like terrorism, target killing, high inflation rate so why not focus our energies on something positive. Rather than always focusing on trivials
Well said. You should also publish an Urdu translation of this article as more than 80% of our population would find an article written in English difficult to comprehend.
well said ..............
the problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological. well said...
“the problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological.” well said...
well written article George.
Excellently written .. a clear eye opener to what most people have been and still continue to be blind to
Awesome, I think George should send this to Amir. The guy has a fake degree, a fake character. My personal opinion don't get worried about such people, Allah is watching and will punish these people accordingly. This is a very nice artice
i agree with all points u have raised . Nation is known by the culture, education and mentality of people living inside. but first i would like to tell everyone that i know computers and the video is not a fake one. It was in pieces but the expressions are real even i tried to confirm it with my firend who has worked with him and he told me he is like that.
Now coming to the point which your friend nadeem F paracha said "often says that the problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological". Kindly pass my message to him that this nation has no proper education system in place for more than 50 years what do you expect from ppl....if i were you i would have told him that first provide them education then criticize... he lives in fool paradise where he think evryone is well educated and he is the only one who can bla bla.......common be practical . lets put all our energy in provding good health and educational system to this nation and you will see the results.
geroge after watching the video. i know that i wont be watching his shows again ....so u have one now
Well said, and thanks for taking the time to do so.
well, honestly i had alot of respect for aamir liaqat ali,but i think now i dont even want to switch to the channel on which we see him live everyday.
excellent review . Accept my thanks Indeed this poor nation has become an idol worshiper This mean man by no means can be compared with the Companions of the Holy Prophet or The Holy Prophet for a fraction of a second. Innalillah for these poor Pakistani mentality. Thank you again.
Very well done George!! You have given us the very much good insight of our country yet again..i agree with NFP that the problems are psychological....besides we, in Pakistan need quick changes like transformation from dictatorship to democracy ,,,i mean a change of face ....its just that aamir liaqat (since his degreees are doubtful) i wont call him a doc...poor guys time was up and he lived it to the best of his abilities very cunningly. I wish to stick a bumper sticker on my car saying .....YOU PAKISTANIS HAVE JUST BEEN HAD BY AAMIR LIAQAT HUSSAIN!!
@Fah: George might have left the country, but he can still consider himself Pakistani. There are millions of Pakistanis who live in the diaspora and he just happens to be one of them. In fact, from what I know, his circumstances are more mitigated by factors beyond the normal/usual ones and so his move should not be so judgementally frowned upon. That he embraced Pakistan and felt and feels positively towards is is a wonder in itself and should be appreciated, not berated.
George,
Extremely well written article! I wonder why people can't see the real person as a religious leader and keep believing someone who has no ethical values..He is such a fake "Man". I have personally seen him misbehaving and using abusive language with people.May God protect us from hypocrats.
good article.its nice to know that george is so much sincere with all of pakistanis.its high time for us to amend ourselves and be honest as a nation and as a person.and start accepting our faults.thanx george for making us realize that.
@Frank: why is it always offensive when someone shows us the mirror, specially when he happens to be white-skinned?
George, Assalamalaikum,
The people of South Asia are gullible - we have been this way for a while now - we believed Jinnah, Gandhi and Nehru (and some of us believe the Dalai Lama) - while they themselves didn't always believe in what they said and did - Pakistan's borders came about through this naivety - we know we don't need the border with India or with Afghanistan, but we'll keep them, because we are scared and let others, our leaders, decide for us - they are scared too, so they let the higher-ups decide (including foreign governments, mainly the American). This fear comes from lack of knowledge.
Knowledge makes compassion, makes wisdom, makes action, makes justice.
in Arabic, the corresponding words are ilm, rahm, adab, amal, adl.
in street lingo, it's easier: knowing makes feeling makes caring makes doing makes right.
We don't have the first ingredient for justice - this knowledge is not the technical knowledge imparted in schools colleges and universities, it's the knowledge a mother gives her child without any blackboard and chalk or computer. This lack of knowledge is not specific to South Asians, americans are also getting fat and people everywhere suffer because we don't have alot of that knowledge these days.
The solution: we need to get it - while our mothers themselves are victims of this ignorance, the place to get is is the source of knowledge, God. now it gets tricky for some, and easy for others, it's easy for those who have read the book of god and know the people of God - knowledge is with god and with God's people - they're not amongst us anymore, but their records are - I'm talking about a full scale retrieval of Islam at the population level - islam is the solution to the borders to the malaise to the modernity, to the pollution - if we'll have even a few people, even one person who knows God, things will change. We don't have that one person as yet. We only need one. The rest will follow. And make americans thinner, and fix our current psychological states. This has happend before in history - it can happen now too - let's ask for it to happen. And we'll be better. Let's ask God for God. God will give us the Islam of the prophets, not the Islam of Pakistan or of Jinnah or anyone else.
"We trust Aamir Liaquat’s superstitious claptrap when he blames the Pakistani cricket team’s poor performance on the green colour of the soles of the team’s shoes." yeah somebody please go and tell him not to ever step on grass and rub his feet on it... it may be considered blasphemy as well.
we will think for our self when we benefit from thinking our self.
an explicit article highlighting the problems at grass root level,in addition to stressing a fact that no "Character Assassination'' has been done to Amir Liaqat in the name of religion!!
dear Jone,
I agree with you problems are psychological.
we need the brains at the top to configure this behavior of the society, but the irony is that can't see them coming soon...
The writer has not say any word about the tape which was properly edited from the data of last 6-7 years.
JANG GROUP has history of alluring/tempting staff of their competitors. Mir Khali ur Rehman is founder of this art, one can research on this topic and finds the fact, he did this all his life. Now his successors are giving new height to this art. Great work GEO, nicely plotted, adeptly edited and smartly broadcasted.
Excellent..a well written article painting a true picture of the state of Affairs in our country.
He is such a cheat...people must avoid taking his advice in future....
Nice observation. Spot on!! well done George. Shame on you Aamir Liaquat...
Tbh I never bought his act of piety and sincerity. I always knew he was a fake, just didn't know he was this fake. Its clear that the young internet savvy population has largely rejected him and his poor attempt at clarification. Many in the older generation who are under his charm will probably not see the light of day and so will the young ones who haven't had the previlege of enjoying an education where their rational faculties can develop. However, there are several adults, particularly those who have seen him as he moved up the ladder of the religous media rather than coming across him when he had already developed into the final product that he has been for only a few years, who know how much of an opportunist he is.
To all the patronizing fools who believe that George cannot comment on Pakistan just because he left the country, Please get a reality check. If your life was in danger, you would do the same. Atleast he is still thinking and trying to offer people some geniune, heartfelt insights. Atleast he didnt run off with millions of our hard earned taxpayers money, and then come back to 'serve' us like our insolent leaders.
We as a nation need to understand who is honest and upfront, and who is deceitful. Please get over your 'Pakistani-ness' or whatever superiority you dig by willingly or unwillingly sticking around and living in Pakistan and stop attacking the wrong people.
Denial is chosen because its unsavourry...cowardness leads to denial and unrest in our society. If ones notices, Mr amir has been advertising himself extensively on bill boards too, I wonder why? A true and capable person finds reputation and fame him/her self, it doesn't require promotion! Another irony, why no one is taking any action??
He has a good point, problem i feel is not that he was swearing, it is that he LIED... most of us swear and I am not say that it is right. But at least don't lie......
These words are not coming from a Pakistani, because of the exact same reasons that have been stated in the article. We are in denial and oblivious to what is happening around us; defending all ills and not standing up for the morals that we have been brought up with. Its about time we realized what the situation is and do something about, rather than getting offended over constructive criticism. It doesn't matter who it's coming from, it matters what the message is. I'm a true blood Pakistani, through and through, but that doesn't mean I'm going to blindly defend my country whatever the circumstances - look where that got us. Its about time we accepted criticism and actually got on our feet and took a stand.
@Frank: Its idiotic thinking like yours that has sunk this ship....instead of listening to reason and truth you have chosen to alienate it simply bc the source doesnt fit into your tiny narrow view of credibility. I deeply pity you
@Frank: It takes the proverbial "balls" to come and live in a country like Pakistan and fall in love with it and adopt it. George deserves as much right to write about this country as any other citizen here! And the answer to your question is "Yup yup yuppity yup!!" Kudos George! "Dr."Amir Liaquat is to Islam preaching what "Dr.Kevorkian" was to the hippocratic oath! Maybe he might come to a similar end.
Dear George, I'd seen the clip quite before your superb article... I think what Mr. Liaqat behaved behind the scenes was the outburst of a sick and suppressed mind what is the sample from a big lot at the top now a days almost in ever walk of life in Pakistan. Such outbursts can be seen everywhere in Pakistan. They are all sick minds otherwise I couldn't find anything funny in question of caller woman about the religious legality of suicide in certain situation. This so-called 'Dr.' Liaqat wasn't synically laughing about the craziness of caller's question but he was laughing at the 'situation' about which the question was asked for. How the hell could anybody dig anything funny out of caller's question? This is one example of our inflating lot of stupit kind of TV 'anchors'. Another example can be found on Youtube where another junky anchor (Nadia Khan) behaved at the height of stupidity between domestic fight of two celebs and aird the recorded fight for which her show was banned for six months. Majority of readers must have seen that clip too. You see? They are all the same sh*t. There's only difference of degree of their filth and sickness of their minds.
Excellent.
Indeed! So true whatever you said.. and very well written.
May Allah forgive us all for our sins Ameen. We are in no position to point at anyone cause we ourselves are very gunahgaar people. Only who hasn't done any sin or gunah can point at others. These are Allah's affairs, I know this much, as much as Aamir achieves in one night, others like you and me can't achieve in a life time. So JazakAllah o Khair to Aamir for helping me come closer to Allah, and my dues to him is May Allah bless him with all his reheat, and forgives all his sins too Amin. George just be careful when u print such articles cause u make hope go away from lots of crying people in Pakistan. If you want to do good, do it in a constructive way. We all know whats happening and going around. May Allah bless you with Eman and make you a stronger person.Amin regards Noreen
not sure about the video being fake or real, but I know for sure that Dr. sahab have better acting skills then Amitab Bachan and Shahrukh khan. I saw Dr. sahab five years ago at a iftar party I wanted to tell Dr. sahab then and there that I really enjoy his acting on TV but the huge crowd surronding him did not allow me :(
@Frank: yes you're alone, out of the many article's I have read written by "white" people, his tone is the LEAST patronizing and demeaning. Whatever he wrote hit right home, he raised points that really need to be thought about and sorted out..Now.
George this was very well written, congrats. Let us expose such hypocrites and also look into our ownselves to bring in individual change
@Frank: Frank - your lack of an intellectual response is so typical of what is wrong with Pakistan. Clearly, this is the best you could come up with - sad...
Whole story related with the mentality of our society. Bcz people so so credulous that they are dependet on these self proclaimed scholars. And following these people blindly. Their words proved to them as authentic and justifiable.
Amazing article -- thanks!
Excellently written articale by George Fulton,
Dr
liaquat-.......really such a cheap low standard comedian.@ George urgg!!! please don't do this . Atleast You don't become a hypocrite now. You know very well that the video ain't fake. his lips are completely supporting his voice. yes theres a bit problem in the audio. Observe the lips people. T hey are matching. . George i would request You to stop taking his wrong side while You know the reality. yup i can only say that we should not make fun of him. and keep his secrets. that's it.
So very true George. You have very rightly expressed the disappointment and utter discomfort among the people's of "Islamic" republic of Pakistan. The fact that a person commits a sin and then very utterly denies it too makes him a bizarre figure. Having said that, the term "Bizarre" is applicable to the more morally sound people of the society which unfortunately we lack in numbers in our society.
No wonder why "Dr. Amir's" show continues in "Islamic" republic of Pakistan...
I couldnt agree more..this is perfectly written!.
The lip and movements do not match. Are you people blind? If you want to believe that he is a cheat and a liar then find a better reason. Even I hate him, that does not prove that the video is real.
Here is a very apt sher by Ghalib for Amir
"GHALIB BURA NA MAAN JO WA-AZ BURA KAHAY
AISA B KOI HAI K SAB ACHA KAHEIN JISSAY...."
God Bless you George Fullton :)
i found this through google Aamir Liaquat First Written Answer To Dubbed Videos http://www.awamiweb.com/aamir-liaquat-first-written-answer-to-dubbed-videos-23753.html
@Shehryar: - Are you serious??? i hope you are joking right??
Good analysis and an attempt to revive (with a low voltage shock) the dying soul of Pakistanis. I guess they have little soul left in them. They need a bigger shock, bigger humiliation, they are waiting for some thing big. God help them.
Your article is brilliant and must say that you have hit the nail on the head. We are Islamic Republic of hypocrisy. Unfortunately our country is governed by bunch of idiots and some “disco” religious scholars are manipulating the religion. "the problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological" - Well Said!
Nice piece of work George! Though we will do with it what we always do...fall into a dogmatic discussion about what is (additionally to the faults you've laid out) wrong with us and then go back to sleep again after coming to no conclusion. We need Legos!
We are thankful to people like you George, who have the courage to write such articles. As in our society to talk against someone who is liked this much automatically leads to eyebrow raising. Its a shame for us and our country to have people like Dr Amir Liaqat who know exactly how to play with peoples minds and feelings but what is more sad is that before this channel the channel before this also worked with him for he was bringing them the ratings and their channel was the most watched so they accepted whatever he had to offer and no objections were put upfront then. This is all about success and the chase to be the best over the best and it will never stop. You are right when you say we as society may be psychologically sick. Its sad how we cant look at the truth and want to put our heads into the ground and hope that the trouble would vanish away but it comes to us ten times fold in return.By encouraging hypocrites like Dr Amir who exploit Islam we are encouraging our beliefs and system to fail further and we are a part and parcel as we all contribute towards it in our own little way.I hugely respected the man but he has lost all respect in my eyes.Everytime i look at him i think here we have a liar, a hypocrite hiding behind the veil of Islam. He is worst than anybody else and if to be it was all editing why is asking for forgiveness or apologizing to his viewers such a bad thought? It is because the word sorry does not exist in our dictionary but we can use it to manipulate it when we want to give big lectures to people on TV to ask for forgiveness from Allah and people around you.Like its easy to preach but difficult to practice.Dr Amir should have apologized for what he had done that would have made him a bigger and a better hero in the eyes of the people.A far stronger message of rising above the petty politics of channels and showing he is a man of conduct. But sadly there is none and we talk of the holy scriptures. It is but laughable!
@Zulfiqar: Normally people (at least people with more than 2 braincells) know that politicians hardly ever say the truth. But the 'DR' preaches about Islam and God, so you can expect a bit more honesty from him.
Nicely put. Awesome piece of reality!
By far the best article iv read so far regarding the havoc over Mr. Liaqat. You have excellently summarized the whole scenario by not only presenting the antecedent but also explicitly well explained symptoms too. May we all be guided righteously.
@Ali Akbar Khan:
Isnt it much easier to say that the good doctor is not a good muslim, instead of abandoning reason, rationality and common sense. Come on,have you seen the video it looks very authentic Besides what would Mossad, Cia etc gain from discreting a muslim scholar??
I can't believe how easily people get brainwashed. One video and that sit, we all hate Aamir Liaquat. There is absolutely no proof of this video being genuine. The lip movements might match the timing of the words but no one can prove if he is actually saying the exact words. And my word please watch the video again and hear the voice. It looks very different from when he does his show. But at the same time we have no proof that this video is false. According to Islamic laws it is forbidden to make allegations on someone without any proper evidence. So they call it a Muslim country. Please stick by it and leave this matter to Allah.
And btw look at yourselves for a change and try to change yourself before pointing fingers at others because when you point 1 finger at someone, you have 3 pointing to yourself
well as far as i think.. its good to write article talking about someone who one is on tv show.. dont compare Bhutto with amir liaqat.... Bhutoo was a man of word.. he did alot for the country.. and secondly.. if you think amir was abusive or what ever what we see on the tv are the questions asked from ulama.. not from amir liaqat those alims are awesome.... so please dont be a mess.. talking about an anchor... he is just an anchor talking to alims. alims are authentic and they say everything with refrence from books.. so no need blame amir.. i dont care about amir and i am not intrested in personal affairs.. we all human beings have flaws and we are filled with faults.. we can heir new anchor.... anyways that is true that we are blind.. we cant see the truth.. the reason is we are week coz of our people or government.. or establishment.. who are eating the country like hell... All we can do is change ourselves. and Pray to Allah that he fix everything....
i completely agree with frank! George does seem pretty cynical and i certainly disagree about zaid hamid too!
Half way through reading your article I could tell you were talking along the lines of Nadeem F Piracha who no surprise turns out to be your friend. NFP's articles are as biased as this one by you, which became evident when you compared Zaid Hamid and Amir Liaquat, former an over zealous man putting his life at stake to REVEAL hypocrites like Amir Liaquat and latter who shamlessly befools the FOOLS. Psychological is the logic used in your and NFPs articles. People like you cannot and will not discourage our nation from progressing by trying to confuse us with your irrational unfounded or perhaps deliberately deceiving logic that mixes up good and bad, truth and falsehood, evil and good only to spread chaos in the society.
@Frank:
i agree with u frank 110%
I think George that your articale is an I opener for most of us. I think a discourse should start about the reponsibilities the media. What is being aired?, How is it being aired? must be taken into consideration. I think todays media is only commercially driven and thinks of only financial benifits that is why it tries to show contents which would get to the emotions of the people eaisly. Religion is dear to every one in Pakistan and there are some who are using it only for their advantage. Religion teaches us selflessness, service to others, abolishing your ego, gaining knowledge for the transformation of the socity for prosperity and love for all and more, but then who has the right to use it for his own self intrest. It is unfortunate that media today is only showing a fixed menu of content which are more targeted to the lower nature of the human being. Well its time that all should start to think about a change.
Excellently written. I do not disagree with a word you've written but it's sad to see someone like you, who always exuded such positive energy, to have taken such a cynical tone. I guess Pakistan did that to you. it's disappointing, really.
@Frank: The real reason why you find this Englishman's tone and message patronizing and offensive is your monstrous EGO. And that makes George's message even more true!
If they new his true nature why did GEO TV air his programmes for such a long time?
@Ali Akbar Khan: Please it is time we grew up and realised that Israel, RAW and WEST are not repsonsible for every default in our soceity
I am sorry i differ with the majority of comments which is against Dr. Amir Liaqat. Mistake is of those who make something Godlike and then got annoyed when he did not act as their expectation. He is an ordinary human being like us, This video has nothing very significant in it. We dont have the private videos of others so how can we pin point him? What we think about our self. Are we 100% same in the public and private moments? Dont majority of us break traffic signal if constable is absent?. I have no emotional relationship with Dr. AL Rather I dont belong to his school of thought, but I want everyone to use common sense.
Delusion and denial, two pillars of all religions. Likes of 'Dr' Liaquat pops up every now and then, in societies obsesssed with religion.
Very well-written George and definitely, Singing Hallejullah everywhere does not prove piety!!
wow such a rare thing to see a good and mature piece on express tribune
@Frank: Id say youre alone!
A brilliant article. Of course we will always have commenters like Frank who cannot bare the thought of Pakistan's flaws being exposed. He considers himself a patriot because he will vigorously defend everything wrong about Pakistan. Frank - true patriots want their country to succeed and the truth even when it hurts rather than looking for simplistic defenses to complex issues.
The author has brilliantly summarized what ails Pakistan. We refuse to accept the truth. We defend idiots and bigots. We dig our grave deeper and deeper telling ourselves that the whole world is out to get us. We defend ZA Bhutto, Zia, Zaid Hamid, Imran Khan, the ISI, our pathetic Armed Forces and just about everyone else who has failed us. We hate the US for cleaning up the world's worst terrorist when we should be thanking them. We think we're great. We think our army is so fantastic yet reality does not bare out our beliefs. We then tell yourselves that the media lies to us and stay in our houses and only listen to other people who agree with the lies we were raised on.
Wake up Pakistan. The more we delude ourselves, the less likely we are to succeed as a people and as a country.
@Baray Abu: He did all that; he is still on air| There is nothing wrong with us. GO back Rethink
Great article. We are trying to launch a movement to remove Aamir Liaquat from ARY for 3 simple reasons - his education, his personality and his credibility.
Please like our facebook page so that we can get Aamir Liaquat fired! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dear-ARY-Please-fire-Aamir-Liaquat/200554620005359?sk=wall
@Frank: The man is minding his "own" business as a Pakistani it is his business incase you are not aware. This is the Proverbial "bitter truth" of our society and the first step toward finding resolution to problems is to recognize that the problems exist. Your assessment is a Proverbial "Hide one's light under a bushel" .
@Umair Saeed: Umair we should have open minds and big hearts when dealing with truth. When Pakistani doctors fail to treat our medical conditions we rush to UK or USA. There we have a totally different attitude. We treat these foreign doctors like demi gods and accept their advise blindly.
George is right. Our problems are psychological. Rest is a matter of detail.
Good explanation of how vulnerable the general public is when it comes to following and believing in everything they see. These cable channels are very powerfulbut they share the responsibility in investigating the allegations and providing the public an apology and a disclaimer statement saying they don't share the views of the presenter and the audience must decide for themselves what they believe.
As for this fake, it was high time for his exposure and finally the truth has come out. Let this be a lesson for all, that no matter how high you fly, the harder you fall! The other hard lesson is that the general audience is not only uneducated but also ignorant to the truth. As you say they are in denial and take any valid or invalid criticism as an attack on their ego! If we can overcome our ego problems, we can achieve a lot. Please stop looking up tonthese people, open your eyes and mind and THINK!
Why are "we" so offended by what an Englishman has to say about us when no other Pakistani is saying it? Wake up and smell the coffee, accept the hard truth and try to change instead of being defensive and protecting something that isn't there, patriotism...
Excellent words you have depicted in the article. I'm having point of view that one need not to fix any perception about him without listening his words. He may be right - Video is being edited by some channel - but flipping coin tells it is genuine. If some channel is defaming him, remember, their credibility is at stake too. I was shocked at the point when he says "Serr Deobandi." Pakistan needs harmony among creeds and religion, it would bring hostile feelings among creeds.
Khudara reham kijiye hum per!
excellent article Mr.Fulton. I felt the same way abt the whole Amir Liaquat scenario, but you gave words to my thoughts. very well written.
Why Amir liaquat received ONLY all the "Good Calls" after this incident? because they were probably fake callers, his friends, paid people ...trying to do all efforts to regain the trust he has lost.........George have no doubt about it that People of Pakistan are not as foolish as you think they are,we are known to be one of the finest and smartest brains in world.
The writer has a point, but saying Pakistan has more of a pschological problem, is not true. Such incidents have happened the world over and yet for some reason people still believe these figures. The famous "magician" Uri from America was famous for bending the spoons with his "psychic" powers. Although he was exposed MANY times on several Tv shows by Randi but still people continued to believe Uri. Probably with this example Americans have bigger pschological problems than us.
George I disagree with you when you say that the problem within us is psychological. Actually the problem within us is educational. Someone who cannot think rationally is easily susceptible to the emotional chants of our "Heroes." he will never look for a logical explanation to an argument but instead look for someone who would shower him with his emotional and spicy bitter-sweet talk. Anyone who is capable of thinking rationally would never watch the program in the first place let alone be fooled from it. What makes it more ironic is that the people who actually do watch the program have not read your views and most probably would never be able to. Yes exactly!!! the people to whom you have reached through this medium already believe you and don't watch Alim Online anyway!!!
Exactly
For Allah sake Amir LIaqat is an ordinary human being he never claimed that he is someone very special mean Allah wali .....dont we humans make thousand of mistakes in our daily lives .Just name one peson who doesnt watches movies so what if he named some movie on his show and that also off camera .We asians are the most horrible people all the time doing gheebat after other people just shame on a...ll of us .If Amir has done something wrong which i think he never did but still if u think he did let Allah deal with him what can we weak humans do instead of making a meaningful and informative page u made this page to insult him this will surely bring a big gap between us muslims. If Allah can cover our big big sins y r v displaying somebody else moments which can embarse that other person .i request u all just leave whatever he did to Allah and concentrate on your Ramzan and try to earn as many blessings as possible instead of gosssiping about him
I have not read your complete article. Therefore can't comment on it.But what i have seen in daily motion video,After that,i am feeling the word of Allah has been proven to be the truth.
'Let not those who hurry to fall into disbelief grieve you, of such who say: "We believe" with their mouths but their hearts have no faith..
Those are the ones whose hearts Allah does not want to purify (from disbelief and hypocrisy); for them there is a disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a great torment.
Quran 5:41
Beautifully nailed the problems with have in our society. As for "Dr?" Liaquat: You fool me once shame on you, you fool me twice shame on me.
Only if they had cameras and youtube some 1400 years ago...
Good article but one sided
the problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological. Oh man you wrote my sentiments!
Got to love George, especially when he calls himself a Pakistani. Amir Liaqat makes me cry for Pakistan.
Very well said. I have always believed Pakistans main problem is its society and the people.
This column is the BEST comprehensive analysis of the subject. Really the best summary as stated: "we can’t accept the truth even when it’s staring us in the face. Pakistan can only resolve its problems when it’s able to accept some uncomfortable, unpalatable truths about its society."
Hi George
A good article to read and think about. Well versed and well articulated.
The only problem is that those who can read your article are not his victims anyways! It's the poor and illiterate who would go for people like him. For the same reason, I haven't met anybody (ever) who likes him! Why? because our social circle is different, we need reason and logic to convince ourselves. And his supporters, though in majority are from a different class.
My point is: "George, if possible put it on YouTube so people can understand by listening to you!".
It also shows how Fake characters our TV channel bring to miss guide audience n sell their program.
@Ali You are the reason "Dr" Amir Liaquat is still on TV. No video can be edited or dubbed this much, where his hands are moving. WAKE UP PAKSITAN.
@D Don't take it offensively because whatever he said was true, be sad that very few people in Pakistan think like him.
Very beautifully George you give a words to a thoughts of millions.
"Nadeem F Paracha believes Pakistan's problems are not political, economic or social but psychological ...". That's so true. He has said in just a few words what many struggle to explain in whole books.
Btw, good article, George. NFP has been a great influence on a number of rational columnists, including both you and Fasi Zaka.
i am not his fan but i was thinking people sometimes have double standards, judging him so harshly was bit unfair ..because cursing which can be bit business as usual among boys or even grown ups some times....
however you did change my mind ..he was ridiculing the very people who respect and trust him...and cursing while discussing religious matter is disgusting.... George you nailed it
Excellently written article. Exactly my sentiments.
Religion does this to people. Witness the blind followers of the Maharishi, legions of slick US televangelists, assorted rabbis, shamans and medicine men. After all we know for a few years now that AMH's 'academic qualifications' were bought off an internet degree mill. Why am I not surprised..?
I believe that he repented himself. He is still doing a good job bringing us closer to our religion. Using abusive language off the screen is a matter between him and God. This does not mean he is misguiding us from Islam. He is doing TV shows from last three to four years, if he had convinced even one person on Sirat,ul,mustakim, we should at least give him some credit. We already accepted in the past that GEO TV is not work for the wellbeing of Pakistanis. My question is what they are going to achieve by making this video.???. When most of us used slange language so called (galliyan) at one time of the day and then go for prayer the other time of the same day, when people who are drinkers and gamblers fast during Ramadan and pose as no one is more Muttaqi than them, then why we expect from celebs that they will be not as Munafiq as we are! Why we think they will be different from us. If any of you watch this video on youtube, read the comments people have left on it. 'Sadly' I must say that our own pakistanis and muslims have used 10 times more abusive and shameful language in protesting against the video in the motnh of Ramadan. How can we justify that? People are leaving absolutely shameful and dirty comments about him on youtube. In that case I think they are no different
Really? After reading that whole article, you really had room to think about [nevermind being concerned with] the fact that this was not written by a Pakistani?! Isn't this the very thing that's wrong with our society? I'm having a hard time understanding why it would be relevant if this was written by an Egyptian or a Japanese individual, whether these views were of the President of United States or a member of the Zulu Tribe. The truth will stay the truth no matter whose mouth it comes out of.
Do not insult the man's intelligence.
awesome!!!
I wonder why you keep calling him a doctor again and again. His PHD degree has been proved fake. Even Mubashar Luqmaan invited him to his program to talk about all this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJrPmxR9Xpo
Nadeem F Paracha has been tweeting about this incident but its only you who is writing about it. I wonder why none of the other TV channels or newspapers are highlighting it.
Anyways very good column. Great!!!
I agree with the part when you mentioned about our problems being psychological than any other ...
Accepting the reality is one thing but as far as my observation is concerned, the reluctance to accept his real face is more from the side of our senior citizens who might spend more time watching TV than being on the internet ...
Now the issue with this guy is that he faces the camera denying the footage all the way. Had our softwares been so advanced that they could manipulate gestures, tones, facial expressions and the song that he was singing, Hollywood would have been at our doorstep asking for the copy rights or trying to buy it off for an amount that could have relaxed our country's debt burden. We know why ... because it doesn't exist.
Great Article George! It's more like a mirror which we can see our reflections in ...
George, you sir, are a true legend! I would have you as the new 'aalim online' anyday in place of this "ghalib film dekhi hai" doctor.
regards M Atif
Brilliant article! My sentiments exactly. Thank you George for putting my thoughts to words so beautifully!
Exactly what i was telling my friends last night.
You've taken the words out of my mouth! A good read.
the word ''psychological'' is very aptly written with respect to our nations problems'.Wishing if nadeem paracha could write about this too..I never opened the link...im glad i have a mind of my own ....rational enough not to believe this stuff ...and coming ones..in years
Moral of the story : Pakistan cricket team's poor performance was due to their green sole ..
Well written
@Frank: ....Frank, fankly speaking, you are on the dot...the question in my mind while reading this article was, 'what business has he got to do with this?'
@ Frank leave these self loathing losers . Agree with you 100%, it is useless to argue with those who only see flaws in their people after someone else tells them or through video tapes. BTW i am not a fan of Dr Liaquat.
We should try to oust this man Amir Liaquat Hussain from the media. Nasty man should not be making fool of the innocent ordinary people.
Frank, this kind of thinking represents a hypocricy of the highest order, when one of us gets a western countries citizenship of a western country, we expect full and equal rights including the right to critisize on social issue, while when George a Pakistani citizen does the same you find it hard to digest. Bigotry has no limits it seems...
And yeah all of you who think the AL's video is a fake, God help you:)
Completely agree with Fah on this: "It’s interesting how you use the word “We” and yet you’re the one who left the country…"
and with Frank: "There’s an African proverb that states that ‘singing Hallejullah everywhere does not prove piety’.
There’s an English proverb that goes something like ‘Mind your own business.’
Am I alone in finding this Englishman’s tone and message patronising and offensive?"
Out of all the irrational, delusional and psychologically disturbed Pakistanis, comes forward a divorcee of Pakistan who had left with a whiny note for those who were still in a relationship with it. A post divorce therapy is usually recommended for divorcees who just cant stop whining even after the divorce.
@Sajawal Javaid: I salute you for having such a clear , practical and nice attitude, But these people will never understand because they want to be deceived ,they want to live in false world.Hopeless people they are... Who can not see the truth even if you prove it hundred times. And salute to georg too for showing his concerns about Pakistan.
Yes Frank, you are alone. George the 'Englishman' is as Pakistani as anyone else is, what's your point?
Its his problem, he is answerable to ALLAH not us on his behalf. This clip is not dubbed at all, but the point is dont we all swear in our daily lives? if you see the oh so famous tv anchors off the screen, this video will look like a cartoon clip for kids to you.
I am not trying to advocate amir or geo or ary or any molvi for that matter, admit it, we all love to gossip. And after some time we have something to talk about other than (Shahrukh and Kareena) read shaista and sahir :).
The video is not dubbed and it can be proved anywhere but i beleive amir liaqat (if he really thinks this video is dubbed) should get an audio forensic expert on his show and prove it live on air that its fake :)
Best for him was to ignore this video. but he didnt and the the drama that followed on the sehri night when a caller calls from Makkah and then other from MAdina who performed Umrah for him and made a point to call in the show.
About time we leave him alone with his drama.
CONSIDER THIS
During Sehar Transmission ARY Digital has achieved 25.4 GRPs whereas GEO TV received 5.5 GRPs and HUM TV 0.7 GRPs.
During Iftar Transmission ARY Digital has achieved 66.9 GRPs where as GEO TV received 35.6 GRPs and HUM TV received 17.0 GRPs.
Thats the norm in pakistan for his kind (religious scholars/ leaders etc)to make fools of the public in the name of God. Its been the norm since the creation of pakistan, they have all looted, lied and wheeled their way in, and all in the name of Allah. Religion has been instilled in our society via fear and we have been conditioned not to question these personalities as they use religious dogma to enforce their authority. Its about time all these clowns got their real faces exposed , so sick of seeing these commercialised religious so called scholars forcing their weird notions and opinions in urdu laced with a heavy arab accent to the unassuming fearful simple public of Pakistan.
I so not agree! Whatever happened, the videos should not be coming out like this from video channels..
@Frank: I’d say the proverb “Mind your own business” simply does not apply to this man, given how much he has researched on Pakistan and integrated himself with it. In fact, he has all the right to make any and all statements he made, and I for one agree with him completely. What he said was a hundred percent correct and I salute this man for caring enough about Pakistan to express his opinions and concern in the way he did.
He always looked phony and a fraud to me. My wife never agreed and always thought of him as a poised and devoted man.
Now I know I was right all along.
Very well written article george... Respect to your brilliant summing up of the situation!
Dear George:
Great article True reflection of the facts. You said everything I wanted to say, in a better way indeed!! Hats off to you for your courage and frankness.
So aptly the article describes the mass psychology of Pakistanis. Bravo....!
Lets follow George, He seems to be spiritual leader of Pakistanis..
This is just ridiculous! A few swears does not make a person good or bad. One should hate him for the two-faced wanabe Shahrukh khan that he is not because of this video. The whole purpose of "leaking" this video was to malign his character obviously by the people who are extremely jealous of his success on ARY.
Agree with what George has written and majority of the Pakistani believe Dr. Amir is a great actor and a fake so I dont think any sane person is supporting him but is it a coincidence that whenever something bad comes up in Pakistan, immediately we see an article from George .... bashing Pakistan and people of Pakistan. There are hundreds of good things that are happening in Pakistan. Have you George ever bothered to write how thousands (if not millions) are supporting our local Pakistanis with charity, how so many hospitals like shaukat khanam and many other clinics and hospitals are treating patients for free, have you ever bothered to write about Edhi? etc. etc. I guess the moment he mentioned Nadeed Farooq Paracha as his friend, it all summed up for me :)
George...Pakistanis in general r humane but innocent people.....its difficult for a common pakistani to see through the facade. There has never been dearth of people like Dr in our country and religion (read mullahs, aamil babas) who have been duping the public. Most recent is the copyrights war on the moon sighting...which last time i checked was in the sky apparently for the whole universe to see.... But people like Dr piqued my curiosity and a quest to find out the real Islam for myself..... result... I started reading the Holy Quran with translation..... If instead of relying on fast food-like answers to our every religious problem from these so-called scholars we toil ourselves , we will be much more enlightened... So there is a silver lining.....
a well written article with excellent emphases on the society we live in. well done.
Nice article. Thanks for highlighting the facts.
@aicha absolutely true especially when one is confused about someone's integrity.
Somehow the other i always had this opinion that Amir Liaquat was a 'FAKE'. This video proves it. I have seen him misbehaving with airlines employees at the airport. And people please stop blaming others(CIA/MOSSAD etc) for all the ills of our society.Face it, whenever anybody(in Pakistan) gets blamed for any misdeed they very conviently put the blame on others/conspiracy(foreign agencies).
@Frank:
Well I guess you and the 57 odd who recommended your post didn't get the memo, this Englishman is a Pakistani!
channal showihg his religious programme must be ask to explain why such a hypocrate was given chance to play with sentiment of people. unless proper explanation is given by owner of channal this channal must be banned to appear on tv.
@Muhammad Ahmed: i agree .. our fascist and so called liberals need to be put down just as the religious extremists.
Very Good article George!! I have always been fan your Intelligence. People are delusional when they say that this video is fake!! Well they should realize this, that the dubbing and sound effects could be fake, but the Amir Liaquat's gestures were very much relevant to context and the Abusive language that he shared!
@ Above; Why do we always go for cmplx answers to our Q. y do v always go the conspiracy theories? I am not the authority to judge sm1 but the video is far better than being a fake in my view........ Rest Allah knows better !!
though i dont agree with his views about zaid hamid...... but on the whole its an awesome article with the perfect treatment "amir liakat" deserves...
George ....... have you seen "Galib" the movie
This guy so called Dr. Liaquat went beyond swearing.....he insulted Islam as a whole....Reciting poetry of insulting nature to some certain sect....Drinking tea before ifhtar....Making fun of serious question....&....his comments about sahabas....i saw his reply on youtube....and very well planned phone calls...first from MAKKAH & second from MADINA....cannot believe coincidence....his explaination about his leaked video....was just similar to one we gave either to childerns or bunch of fools....Quality of his explaination tells everything about PAKISTANI nation.. Overall Article is well written....nice effort
the article is definitely well written - but there are 2 things to note here. 1. we are being told not to believe everything we watch and yet we are required to believe that the video is NOT edited? this level of editing is very possible, please note those who are misinformed.
Amir Liaquat is probably being made to suffer this indecent exposure because he is NOT twisting Islam. his following is increasing, probably because he is right!@everyone and george please dont get emotional after watching such kind of videos ,look sound modelling is a very easy thing to do and we should know that we are living in a technology smart world. .this video is fake in my opinion as an engineer i know that we can model anyone 's voice and give any input to the model and the output would be our input in that particular voice May b i m wrong ,may b this video is not fake .but please think that IF the video isn't real then everyone of you would be doing a sin known as "BHUTAAN" and ALLAH would ask you on the day of judgement for that
@Ahmad: Why not compare Aamir Liaquat to Bhutto? They can both be categorised as two-faced hypocrites - Bhutto was not great saint. There was a huge gap between his words and deeds. If you bother to read history, you would know that at the exact time that he was throwing his famous tantrum at the UN, the army had already (at his prodding) agreed to surrender in Dhaka. And that's just one example - ever seen the fawning and sycophantic letters Mr Bhutto wrote to Ayub Khan? The personalities of these two "gentlemen" are very similar: egotistic, narcissist charlatans who mislead people.
"The exposure of Aamir Liaquat exposes some of the country’s inherent contradictions and character flaws..."
Nice article, but i'm of the opinion that these problems are not just limited to Pakistani society. People have the tendency to follow blindly throughout the world. Take Fox News as an example - a major percentage of Americans rely heavily on Fox for their news coverage and take whatever is reported by them as hard stone facts. Jon Stewart's Daily Show and the Colbert Report among other online websites and more have shown how Fox distorts the news headlines to make their point, but still, people follow it without hesitation.
Perhaps that's not the perfect example. But regardless, it is definitely a fact that Pakistan is hit hard by these problems. A major population consists of illiterate people or those who don't have enough resources to investigate anything on their own. When they're told that its nothing but just a dubbed to disgrace Amir Liaqut they believe it easily because in their mind, the world is full of corruption and anything is possible with technology. Mankind is a funny thing - we'd rather force corruption/falsehood in others than identify it within ourselves or those that we love.
The best part of the article is the denial phenomena of us. Had it happened some where else with any celebrity, he/she would straight away apologized for it.
This video never came as a surprise to me. He is a "shobda baaz" a "Madari" so as most (in fact all) of our politicians are. I think that we as a nation have a very low standard of morality. Please note that he was not alone when he was doing all this, there were producers, technicians, office boys, camera men and God knows what other technical staff and may I mention the Mullas. Out of these people no one had the moral standard to stand up and say anything to this man.
I am absolutely sure that most of us who are putting comments here including Mr. Fulton would not have said a word if this was happening in their presence. So for me Aamir Liaqat is just one of us he is as normal as a normal Pakistani, it is just that he can sell him self better.
So for me the denial is that there is only one bad guy or very few.....
Amir Liaqat is a fake. I thank the people who exposed him.
Truly sad :( Dr Aamir Liaquat has sent proposals to Reema... Pesturing her through text messages. Then again this society sides with the male & says that Reema was seen with him at PC. May I ask, why was this married man & so called Aalim with her-which I know is fabrication done by him to malign her? Why isn't he blamed? He is a liar!
Very well written indeed! Every word of it is so true. I congratulate you on producing an other extraordinary peice of work; keep it up George, i support you.
Really well Done article, but i wish the poor illiterate people of Pakistan may also be able to understand the reality of the situation
If only he had owned up we wouldn't really be discussing this.
The sad part is that doctor sahib represents us, Pakistanis. Like it or not, this is the face of Pakistan that the world sees. I agree with the earlier comment that a boycott of channel, would bring some humility to our narcissistic doctor sahib.
Am surprised that the higher ups at ARY aren't taking any action to mitigate the damage, what's up with that 'haji' shahab?
Harsh realities we never accpet
... its more complexed than what it seems..
Firstly economic social and monetary problems DO lead to psychological problems. Secondly the HR manager for GEO or watever channel is to be blamed for hiring such a person to do the job.. there is no problem with the program ALIM ONLINE and hence it should never be off... DOCTOR should just cut out the melo drama and carry on sticking strictly to the books.. (he has a shiny tongue..not real gold though)... he has a fan following, money and influence... one cannot make a devil factory out of him by dishonoring him this much ..!
I have not came across a single person supporting Aamir Liaquat's acts! Your assumption that Pakistani society is going to buy the same Manjan which he is selling from past 10 years is not so sound! Secondly Nadeem F. Paracha himself need some treatment of his psychological state, not the Pakistani society. I mean dude!! C'mon! Look at the misery and corruption this society is going through!!! Do you expect a normal society in such situation?
It took me an hour to read your article with the help of Dictionary, what were you trying to prove Amir Liaquat's guilt or your English writing.
Oh and btw...missed this point before @ frank - george is more of a pakistani than some of us.....he was a pakistani by choice not chance.....
This is the problem with the entire Muslim community not just Pakistanis. Psychology of a nation is shaped by how the masters engineer it. We have been educated to believe in logical fallacies, false glorification etc for more than sixty years and the product is ready now. If you tell somebody that Allama Iqbal had committed a murder or that he used to drink too, his faith in Islam would crumble down in seconds and you had better runaway from the scene or get slapped at least, if not killed.
Wonderful piece George!
Those who think this Dr. "Moron" is a credible source who can preach us the nitty-gritty of our religion are the very illiterate and narrow minded class of society who tends to believe everything that an IDIOT BOX presents and never question the credibility and background of the person on the show. I have yet to come across an educated and practicing Muslim who even make an attempt to listen to such half baked Mullahs cum scholars.
Recall his PhD degree is also fake and this recent episode leaves no doubt in its veracity.
Its nice to know from the replies that there are people courageous enough and capable of picking up the useful matter out of story
The fact that media is in state of strong competition is benefitting public by uncovering the facts, and the release of editor cut versions have become very popular among viewers. It is definitely an important factor to consider the credibility of person, who's advice we are banking on, but it is more important to judge and regularly double check the credibility. If the videos are not edited the we definitely should rely less on Alim Online's advice, and should definitely refrain from falling in love with just a media presentor, and more importantly completely refrain from having personal relationships with a person of this character, if we ourselves don't resort to casual swearing on daily basis, and make fun of women's problems (which I might not find rare among 85% of Pakistani males, might be 50% internationally). But lets re-think, firstly are we supposed to rely on commercial media which is supposed to make money, by telecasting what majority likes to watch and hear, not exactly truth. Secondly, isn't it more important to double check credibility of information, when there is authentic source available. The information on Alim Online is not first hand information for which only the credibility of source is only option. We should sacrifice our grey matter and some of gossip time to check the credible sources for correctness of his presented info. Thirdly, is anyone here really dreaming of having personal relationship with media people, who's best cashable skill is to entrance people with sellable speeches, truth or not.
George's point on socially widespread social behaviour issues are valid, and they're not limited to Pakistan. There are poeple all over the world who wud believe that sun rises from west, or even they're God themselves, if the statement comes from their favourite political / religious leader, movie/rock star, media presentor, community leader or person they love. But makes these problems severe in Pakistan is our own reluctance to gain true knowledge. Remember something ? "Go to China if you have to". An average Pakistani wont go to nearest library or even internet archives, to verify the commercial info on the TV. Changing channel is not the root solution, changing attitude is! If we can can do that ,Channels will change themselves, we wont have to.
Excellent article! It's sad and ironic to read some comments here, which makes this article even more logical. It's a shame that so many Pakistanis live abroad and western societies own them provide them a new identity and first class status, and people here are pointing finger at George and calling him an outsider when he is trying to be one of us, thus calling addressing himself as "WE" Thanks.
Yes, true.. and indeed sad, after such an incident the program still goes on.. and why, cause its channel's reputation against our own religion... its Aamir's repo and money against advertisers money..still shamelessly the program carries on with all advertisers of our country supportive of the content showing a deaf ear and fooling themselves and others that yes may be its a fake video since its on the internet...why should the advertising stop since people are still watching... Strange nation we are.. with no sense of responsibility or courage.... At one point we burn our cities in the name of Islam, and at the other we just ignore cause one of their own hypocrite is in the limelight for wrong reasons...
"The reaction to Aamir Liaquat’s exposure also reveals another problem within the Pakistani society. We are a nation in denial. Even when faced with the truth about these unsavoury characters we are still unable to accept their faults."
Disagree with you. The calls that he is receiving on his show doesn't seem to be live calls. ARY can't take the risk of allowing live calls. The wide spread condemnation on twitter and facebook tells the truth. Do you think that even a single person would not have tried to call on his show to condemn his act? Those who still want to follow him blindly would not be more than few..
I am glad to see a charlatan exposed in such a manner. I agree that its a psychological disorder of poor Pakistani people but the root-cause is illiteracy which makes people stubborn in their beliefs, they are not ready to accept that their beliefs could be wrong, rather they concocted a story to protect it. Again this awareness doesn't come up if media doesn't play its due role given massive scale ignorance.
It was 2006 when I saw Aamir Liaqat in National Assembly in a post budget briefing and he was exposed to the audience then wearing jeans and a round necked t-shirt. He was sleepy and irresponsible as his other counterparts were - totally non-professional and non obligatory. So I haven't been a fan of him at anytime rather surprised that how a pseudo scholar mislead the innocent and simple people.
I also remember a program in which he laid down in a grave to represent himself a God-fearing personality... But everything was fake and just for the personal motives to increase its viewership...
For me the statement "Aamir Liaquat is a hypocrite" carries as much news value as "this government is corrupt". Lets face it, we are all hypocrites but luckily we don't have our lives on tape. Trust me I have heard many a scholars curse more than Aamir has in this compilation. I will not side his verbal vomit because yes, he should control it in a religious surrounding. Yet the question is, why was the off-air footage leaked from Geo TV at a time when he has left the channel and when his Ramzan transmission is doing well elsewhere. What was the intention behind this timing and who is the mastermind? Now don't say Aamir is the only hypocrite in this issue....
George You have depicted the real picture of our society, the basic problem here in Pakistan is not lack of resources but the acceptance of our follies. Whenever we caught red handed, we blame on others that this is their mistake. Thanks once again to tell us the real problem of not accepting our crime. Hope one day Pakistani society will be the nation who has courage to accept their mistake and learn from those mistakes.
Love you George! Anyone who patronizes you because of your British origins and questions your use of the word 'we' is exactly the person you are talking about. They would love to run away to another country but they criticize you because they'll do all in their power to not take criticism and stay an Ostrich.
You carry Pakistan within you and I wish to God, WE can bring you back here!
Good article. I agree with most of the points
George, very well said.... its a shame how we are manipulated as ordinary people. That little box of evil that is now present in every room has corrupted us more than it has educated us. Everyday we are turning out to be worse rather than become good.
@Ali Akbar Khan: Unless this is a tongue in cheek comment, your innocence and naivety is simply amazing:D
Love this article esp the bit about us having a "psychological problem" on top of very other problem. I never like the guy starting from controversies on his fake Phd degree and his way of juggling sects. But its all pretty hopeless. He will stay and in a bit we will forget about this video and move on with his shows etc. We are a crazy crazy nation.
Lets see if media, specially TV channels, still let him thrive as aalim on line??
Mighty! Way to go George..
Great job George.... The examples you gave of Bhutto Sb., Zahid Hamid and obviously Aamir Liaquat is a clear depiction of the mindset of people of Pakistan...
We have yet to see how our media, specially TV channels, will treat him now. would he continue to be the Aalim on line???
@Ali Akbar Khan: LOL You really need to get around to the madarsaas and hang out with the taravih gang to see who cusses like what. Let's use the suspension of disbelief then - today a man claims to have this fake VDO with an impersonator - tomorrow when he commits a crime in public and is arrested he will claim that there was an impersonator. @Frank: Hardly ANYONE minds their own business, least of all the media. My strategy would be to change a mind set by using a pen. So pls. have your word and get cracking - put something intelligent out on Tribune
Brilliant piece of writing, mate! And like others, I'd love to lay claim to these sentiments. It IS about time we got ourselves rid of shady, slimy religion-mongers.
@Ali Akbar Khan: Get a life Ali. RAW/CIA/MOSAD have bigger fish to fry then to target Amir Liaquat. Sadly in every incident we try to find a conspiracy against muslim world. It is time muslims start acting like muslims.
You are absolutely right people who are still in denial are actually delusioned.. But let me tell you a vast majority of people believes in truth & that he's fake alim. A lot of people disliked him right from the first day because they sensed all the fakeness in his tone & gestures.Clearly dr liaqat (doesn't deserve to be named that cause his PhD degree is fake as well) should have adopted Pakistan film industry as his career instead of being the so called Alim. Shameless!!
its amazing that how many of the people are blind with eyes but also with brains. It feels as if each one of us is a senseless drone.... How can people believe the so called Dr. Amirs lie about the video being dubbing and blah blah, man technology has far exceeded the expectations of man and movies like Avatar have come out but it is still not reality. I blame the current condition of our state on our mind less drones. That is the main reason behind the so called leaders being elected to run a mockery in our country yes our country, people like them have no place in our country!!!!!
What would it take to get him off air!!!!!????
@ Frank There’s an English proverb that goes something like ‘Mind your own business.’
Actually Frank, this IS his business. You know why? Because he is a Pakistani citizen. It is his duty to point out the problems in his country. It is his duty to remind all of us how we can change in a positive way. That's inspiration man. Instead of appreciating an article that points out the problems in our country, you are criticizing him for the reality. Maybe Pakistanis aren't the only ones in denial. There are people like you who are also like that. If it's anyone to mind their own business, it is you because you're saying something completely unrelated to the topic of the article. So Frank, next time say something positive about the reality and inspiration of the article rather than some useless comment that makes you look like the most stupid person here.
Excellent Article, Indeed greatest problem we have is psychological.
@mind control: Patronizing or not , it is true. This holier than thou TV elavangelist is a phoney like all of the so called religious types. Real piety comes from within and has to do with doing things without seeking recognition.
Aamir Liaqat!!!!! if this is engineerd against you please go and file legal case against your former employer so that they will not dare again to do such mischief against anyone in future. You can not have it both ways, fake doctor... either you should challenge them in the court of law to prove them wrong or accept that the video was original and a testimony of real Aalim.
the video is genuine.it has really exposed amir liaqat.
But it was indeed hilarious to see his clarifications. First call Mekkah, second Medina and there would be many innocent fools who would buy it.
I do not agree with the part 'But then again, most of us don’t propagate an air of piety, uttering gaalis whilst talking about verses from the Holy Scriptures. '.
In fact we do. There are many such examples in our own lives where we start discussing theology in a group of friends, while curse in the very next moment. Check this out:
http://rorolia.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/what-aamir-apology-should-have-been/
Hats off Great Article and for those who still beleive the video was fake you guys probably beleive that Our President is the most honest person on the face of the Earth
dear george, u have proved to be a good observer and u have rightly diagnosed the malaise of this society... this article of yours is just an example of it... the whole article is wonderful except comparison of two mad people, with bhutto.. i hope u recognise the mistake and correct it.. no comparison at al..
this is really good. i was talking to this friend the other day after watching the video, and this is what he said ''achaaa bandaa haii , hum boys ki tarah hai ". after reading the part where you said ''We have developed a Stockholm syndrome with the egomaniacs on our screens.Falling in love with them rather than contemptuously rejecting them'' i could completely relate these two. i think this is one reason for the problems that this country is facing right now. the people of Pakistan are either very emotional or they are simply really dumb. i say that because of the fact that we ourselves chose a person who is on top of the most corrupted persons list, as the president of our country and with him others like pervez ilahii ,rehman malik and even amir liaqat for that matter. and now all we do is sit at home and complain about the rising prices and unemployment, this was bound to happen, how could have anyone thought otherwise. i think its time for us to stop fooling around and do whatever we can for this country because honestly Pakistan is going down the drain, and only we, the people of the country can prevent this from happening. PAKISTAN ZINDABAD !
Gosh, you really are right at him being the Zaid Hamid of TV religious news presenters. I feel like every channel in Pakistan is like Fox News, you'll have Zaid Hamid the so called security expert who is the Pakistani version of Ann Coulter (youtube her if you don't know who she is) and on the other end you have Liaqat and Zakir Naik (yeah he's Indian, but he's popular with Pakistanis), the good ol' kill the Ahmadis and support Osama brigade who we have labelled religious scholars for some reason and yes they're on every channel.
But reading the comments it seems like it's worked and people think this is a foreign plot to ruin Liaqat, because we all know Mossad's No 1 target is Aamir Liaquat, don't tell the Feds, but I've heard they're going to attack Chef Rahat next! Apparently her Biryanis are what are keeping Pakistan stable and they know that ruining her career is what will destroy Pakistan!
No wonder people think we're crazy.
It is all about how you look at this video. If u watch it as a neutral and just observer, u may actually feel sympathy for dr sahab. But if u r going to be judgmental, then yes, u can find a lot of dirt. It is a pity that such a talent is being mocked in Pakistan. We dont deserve great people!
Excellent article!! Thanks for putting it all in perspective.
Sadly what we see on media talk shows and programs like one of so called Dr. Aamir, it is alla dding to our psychological problems. If one has to keep the minds alive and develop some rational thoughts of own, it i sbest to avoid seeing such people preaching some vested interest agenda.
Good Article.Agree entriely with the point that we wont progress unless we realize that the current predicament is becasue of us not because of U.S or any external force. As soon as we remove the 'evil' residing in us we will progress regardless of force of 'external evil'. Back to Amir, cant fathom how a nation can take inspiration from a guy whose body language in programme aired sounded so artificial and whose degrees sound very suspicious.
What I don't get is: why are "Pakistanis" offended? I mean this sort of proves George's point here, doesn't it? We do live in denial and even when it stares us in the face, we tend to look away and pretend that "everything is just faiynnneee".
Why do we need to be oh so self righteous? It makes me physically sick when I read comments that just voice an opinion "just because"...as George says : "Godforbid, think for themselves" :))))
Very true,,,,these people should immediately be thrown out from the limelight because they are playing with the ideological sentiments of innocent people. again very good piece
@Frank: He is a Pakistani National by the way. And He has every right which every other Pakistani enjoys.
Excellent work sir.. loved your coloumn very much :)
Really ..its not economical....its psychological..... true true... and you know WE ARE NOT READY TO ACCEPT EVEN THIS... FOR NEXT 20 YEARS ATLEAST...PITY PITY PITY
What if he was still with Geo? Had anyone from Geo shared this archive when he was with them? The point is, whatever coming right or wrong, is from a harass-them-all source unless or until they have no place to hide their faces. Plus we made him famous and its us who are responsible. Not this stupid DR GHALIB. A well written article though.
Delusion, denial and "Disappointing" Dr. Liaquat! Well, he can deny it in the face of naive viewers, n they will continue to bestow him with their trust, but he will never be able to gain that self respect , which previously gave him so much confidence rather over confidence; that he was a becoming self proclaimed prodigy!!! Saddddd Aamir Liaqat ... Go back to Trinity College, complete your studies n cm back to give it all fresh start!
@Ali Akbar Khan: Maybe you're right. No 'mussalmaan' can ever use that kind of language, but who's to say 'Dr' Liaquat is one? Why are religious people so easy to fool? Get a beard, pronounce your urdu words in a fake arabic accent and people just blindly start following you in this country. Like Junaid Jamshed, who spends more time giving sermons about the 70 hoors of jannat and making money the 'islamic' way. You really dont think 10% is all the profit he aims to get at his stores right?
Also, great article! You explained quite well how we as a nation easily get manipulated by such people. At one point years ago, I was fascinated with Bhutto's Security Council stunt myself. But you haven't proposed a solid solution, just a bunch of problems in us.
absolutely right ,we pakistanis have psychological problems.psycho is a soft word ,i think we all are mental .in the holy month, every body is talking about a fake footage ,as it is a religious obligation.a dougdogi has come in our hands.
I only came across this today as I happened to be speaking to someone in a social circle and they relayed the incident that had taken place with Dr Amir Liaquat. I won't lie I was taken aback after watching his video on you tube as I never imagined that I'd get to hear or see such behaviour from him purely because me and my fam have been religiously following his transmissions throughout Ramzan and to think someone like him would indulge in such indecent acts, use demeaning and foul language was beyond my belief and thinking. Nonetheless, I believe the "thinking" audience are able to distinguish right from the wrong but unfortunately we have a large population of gullible people in Pakistan who won't be able to distinguish between the two and listen to these so called alims/scholars and not refer to the main source which is the Qur'an itself. It's all well to seek advice but we need to study Qur'an/Islam for ourselves and not become so dependent on these so called scholars that we end up blindly following them. What else can I say certainly an eye opener but definitely not something new as we've accounted such incidents before and its time that Pakistani nation takes notice before its too late.
All TV Evangelists are phonies; they're in there to make money. Anybody who believes Aamir Liaquat is a genuine scholar and student of Islam is indeed crazy... On a lighter note, Mr Liaquat has to hold some sort of world record, for even Einstein would've struggled to complete his PhD SIX days after his masters
@mind control: Sometimes majority means all fools are on the same side!
@Muhammad Ahmed: Your comment is a bit disorienting itself. Are you complimenting George for his article or criticising him for it?
@Frank: Would you still wish to invest your hard earned money with the likes of Bernard Madoff after finding out that he was the greatest con artist that has ever existed. And would you still tell someone to mind their own business if that person told you about the true nature of people like these? I guess not.
A lot of simple people invest their faiths and welbeings with the likes of Amir Liaquat. Call them idiots or what nots but they do and they might deserve to be screwed up based on their ignorance but that might always not be the case. What if that someone is someone you love. Would you still mind your own business and see them getting screwed? If yes, then I guess you yourself need a bit of reality check my dear friend.
Brilliant. NFP is right, its psychological more than anything else. Sigh.
I love you George
@Shehryar: You seriously think the video is fake? Man either you have absolutely no technical knowledge of video editing or you are badly trying to find some excuse to not to stop liking Aamir Liaquat. Go ahead enjoy your Mezan Ramazan Hamsafar, since when our nation has started worrying about quality of our religious scholars. Sad state of our nation
leave george!
' we could blame our crickters for not winning because of the colour of their shoes. ' Well said, but at the end of the day people are till going to think this is a forged video, or give justifications for it, and that is the dilemma of our society right now.
This is brilliant - although I don't think many people fell for the Dr's explanation that it was all dubbed/edited and then proceeded to compare himself to Prophet Mohammed and how he faced such obstacles in the course of spreading the word of Islam.
Somehow, his hypocrisy and insincerity was always on display on his face, but I am glad that I now have real reasons to dislike this con man.
Great article, yes we are a nation in denial, and unless we accept it, we will not move forward. We also have short memories, and I am pretty sure people will forget this after a year or so and again start watching these fake people. @aicha
|HOWEVER in general, if someone on tv is preaching ISLAM according to the Quran and Sunnah. Nothing else that he says, Matters, Nobody is perfect and the Prophet himself has said that you dont have to do good to preach good (right way of Islam)."
please quote the Hadtih to enlighten us. I agree that nobody is perfect but as they say, people will trust you if you walk to talk. it is as simple as that.
It was great that this guy was exposed, and people should write more about this antics. I was not surprised because a couple of friends in the media had told me about him.
i am shocked as to why people are still supporting him and why the renowned Ulemas come to his program. there is something seriously wrong.
Loved it, George.
Boycott the channel and the products he endorse and see how quickly he vanishes. Well at least from the eyes though kicking him from Pakistan will be tough. Can anyone process his Canadian nationality application quickly? We should send him to his sister Farhat!
Also while we Pakistanis are opening eyes to these fake Alims..lets pay attention to the others fraudsters in town. The intolerance and extremism is a result of evil Alims like Aamir liaqat.
Asia bibi accuser is another Alim in Town to keep an eye on. She is taking money for ‘privileged meetings’ with her in which she declare you a good Muslim according to the ‘nazrana’.
perfectly described psychological problem of our society
Excellent..Very well written!
The most fun fact about this whole scenario is that 2 days before the whole expose he was talking trash about Facebook and how Facebook is the culprit behind the whole London riots... and yet Facebook is what really fueled the exposure of his reality...:D
I don't care if Amir bhai is right or wrong for me he is a blessing coz he changed my life .
I pity our paraniod Pakistanis, who even tend to deny a broadday light. Jahils and grand jahil online.
Yes the great thing you point out the physiological syndrome which has made us stupid we have no courage to question someone who is representing the religious scholar's community of our country global and his acts make us thing about whole media is it drama sponsored by local and international players to divert our attention from core issues
why my comments are not published? how different those were than these shared by other people??
I agree with Nadeem Farooq Paracha (NFP). :-)
Seems like all of yOu forgot about the FAKE DEGREES and stuff :] why the hell we are still caling him a DOCTOR ? HOW ON THE EARTH CAN SOMEONE BE A PH.D DOCTOR IN JUST 10 DAYS ??
Amir Liaquat isnt different from rest of the religious leaders and clerics like Molana Diesel, Molana Sandwich and Molana Burqa
Excellent.
Amazing article. Absolutely spot on! We are a "jazbati" nation; slave to our passions. The moment Bhutto tore those pages in the Security Council, he and his rather inept offspring became for some, national heroes to surpass even the greatness of Jinnah, whose passion, however strong, was always showcased in his civil discourse with his peers. Since that day, politicians, activists, pseudo nationalists and self-proclaimed televangelists have vowed to gain fame (and fortune) through passion-filled speeches, honey-coated lies and oft-repeated promises never to be fulfilled!
The people calling on the shows are not the people we know. I've been to the studios, and the So called live calls they take are the people they know and its also a so called live broadcast. They all are cheaters.
Can't agree more..., Hypocrite deserves to be offline now.., Our so-called patriotic media supports such double-faced people and we naively believe them... Alas..!!
The sad thing to your analysis is that I can see a similar article from you when our beloved president Zardari gets reelected by the masses of disillusioned individuals.
the reaction to such a random and insignificant incident enabled you to derive the fact that all pakistanis have a psychological problem.way to go,that is not an all an example of " simple answers to complex problems"
George great job ..(i wanted to write GEORGE GEO hazaro saal ,then i thought that it might lead any one think as publicity stunt for a channel lol)
some good points raised in response posts but i am commenting cuz of the comment above that states For PREACHING goodness ,one doesn't need to be Good himself....I am seeing this hadeeth first time (may ALLAH increase my knowledge amen) .....first of all Let me show you the VERSE from Quran
O you who believe! why do you say that which you do not act? It is MOST HATEFUL in the sight of Allah that you say that which you do not act. (61:2-3)
IS there any thing ELSE you will believe more than WORDS of ALLAH.
secondly Go deep into Hadees you mentioned ,just see ,who are the FOLKS who asked this question ,they were those folks ,who were Companions of RASOOL ALLAH SALALAHU ALAIH WASALAM ,these were the FOLKS ,who were DOING JAHAD BIN NAFS (striving against their own self to make it better for the sake of ALLAH) continuously.right,so how on the earth you can put SAHABA s in comparison with a person ,who makes money in name of RELIGION (you can Google and read again this article too ),thirdly if he apologizes ,yes i did utter those things and Now on wards I WONT DO IT etc then it was acceptable as err of human being who is doing jihad bin nafs ,but you can see. Lastly I requested at his website comment place that kindly place a law suit against any one whom you suspect of making this video maliciously and ask for unbiased inquiry rather responding on tv etc ,for me its not about AAMIR liaquat ,its about any one who talks good on tv about religion ,so if he did any thing bad he should have apologized at first place or run a lawsuit to clear the matter ,not cuz of his SO CALLED RESPECT but for the respect of religious scholars .(btw i am not religious scholar lol)
Here we go again. The hot topic nowadays, Veena must be happy that someone else has finally taken her place. How long is it gonna take before all of us shut up about this. Amazing how we like to comment on such petty issues and make a big deal out of such things. NO, m not a fan of this guy. But I fail to realize how people like to corner a person and have a go at them. Get a life, leave the guy. He will be questioned when it's time, No one has the right to judge for God alone knows what lies in ones heart. Sigh, same old us.
Another Holy man is exposed!!! Sadly, sadly but truly.
But poor George! you effort, writing and scrutiny means nothing to anybody. This is totally ineffective in our land.
Those who were not watching his program earlier, will remain persistent in their habit and will not watch it. And the others, who watch it, and are his fans, will keep on watching his program; come what may. They will get refuge in conspiracy theories and will remain in denial. Controversy is our breed and butter, rather we breath it on daily basis.
Lets peep in, recent past of the our land: Do you remember MNA Jamsheed Dasti??? Guess, what happened to him, after he was caught with fake degrees?? He was re-elected as a member of National Assembly with more votes, with more mandate. I hope you may remember that event very well. '' Death of Hope '' is the rule of the day. So cheer up and rock'n roll.
Excellent article. Believe me the sentiments are the same all over Pakistan. We hate such a hypocrite man. I am unable to understand why ARY is promoting such a hypocrite? Such people are a great danger to Islam and Pakistan.
to an extent i agree...but ultimately it all relies heavily on the illiterate mindset of the majority population....we need to study our religion with true faith and try not to rely on the interpretations of others....QURAN is surely an answer to all our issues..if only we would comprehend on our own!!!
George, this article of yours expresses the exact sentiments that I have with regards to this issue. There are billions of people who swear, but when one is a celebrity and a household name, one should be careful. But the most saddening issue was his sniggering at a question asked by a lady. He should have considered - at the time- what consequences he would face if ever those clips came to light - as they have. Although, I do consider it a sad event that his name is being maligned (with all those humourous pages springing up on social media).
As for his claims that the clips were faked - a good course of action would have been apologizing rather than denying the event.
we Must get rid of people Like Amir Liaqat Hussain. George is absolutely right on this. I might not agree with George on many other things but on this I am 100% in agreement. This is just tip of the iceberg. There are thousands of Amir Liaqat Hussains in our society and we must recognize and do something about them. Those are the Munafiqeens. Look at his filthy language and how he portrays himself on AAlim on Line. He came from our society that means our society is full of such people. Got to do something to find the root causes of such Munafiqat and correct it. Else we will be finding more Aamir Liaqat Ali's in key religious Positions.
Spot on George. My only concern is people with no access to YouTube will remain unaware of this truth, unless writers like yourself spread the word.
@dude: First of all I am with you and the author on this one. However, like any video or movie this video is also edited. Many people cannot understand the difference between an edited and fake video. There is no doubt that this con mullah has uttered those words. The sequence and the editing may not be high quality but it is not fake by any means. The man is in the picture and it is his voice. This video would have been funny if the con mullah were not posing as a religious teacher. God forbid if I were in his place, I would come clean and apologize as a young human being. However, who has ever apologized in Pakistan and nobody makes mistakes? Everybody in Pakistan is super human. Thanks and regards, Mirza
I thought it was an over-reaction until I finally saw it.
I suppose he still has his program?
the video looks edited at some place but he is a drama king i also found this interesting facts on the link given below... it seems that it is fight fight between two media houses for ratings... http://www.awamiweb.com/what-is-the-reason-for-aamir-liaquat-fake-video-23340.html
@Ali Akbar Khan: This is a joke, right? Sort of toungue-and-cheek?
@Ali Akbar Khan: Keep living the dream buddy. Best of luck to you.
Great observation George. And this exact observation extends to our political leaders. I simply cannot fathom why or how we still support them. I was actually pondering over the answer to the question how come so many of my well educated acquaintances keep supporting the Sharifs, the Bhuttos and the Zardaris when they have such a abysmal track record.
I totally agree with this article. Swearing is not the big sin here. It is the projection of a holy and pious attitude while being behaving contrary to that the minute the cameras are shut off. Hypocrisy is the main problem here. And to top that off with his blatant denial of a video evidence no less and blaming it on conspiracies, this guy is a sociopath who needs to be removed from television
@Frank: Sure...Ignore the problems addressed in the article and analyse the "tone". We will surely find solutions that way!
@Frank
There’s an English proverb that goes something like ‘Mind your own business.’ Am I alone in finding this Englishman’s tone and message patronising and offensive?Recommend1.
Well Frank, you wrote it and also have 1 recommend. This obviously means that you are not all alone. Whether it also means that a majority of the respondents share your view? Your guess is as good as mine.
I like the part, "the problems with Pakistan aren’t economic, political or social — they’re psychological."
Beautiful !!! Loved it!
I love his work but we need to admit that this has been a real eye opener. Also I think this gentleman is correct in what he writes and can you explain to me please how you think that what Amir has said and done could be edited? Have you actually heard the swearing??? I don't want to admit it either but unfortunately we have to!!!!!@Urooj:
The video is fake. No true Mussalman could ever use such abusive language. It is a plot by the RAW-CIA-MOSSAD axis to malign Pakistan, the Land of the Pure.
If geo tv was aware of this disgusting swearing habit of his, they should have kicked him out then as he was not practicing what he preached. ISLAM is being commercialized by these channels where they distribute i Pods, DVD players, tv's which have nothing to do with the propagation and preaching of ISLAM. Islam needs to be protected from these hypocrites.
Excellent Article , every word of it had a truth in it , and something for the nation to think about it .
Its time for us to change
True words, but I may not have found this post offensive if it had come from a Pakistani.
Few things to be noted here. If such an incident was to happen in a western country, the person being accused would immediately or notify publicly that he intends to sue the new channel whose footage was used and the production people.
One of the most important things to note here is, if you know you are innocent and have genuine evidence that you are innocent why would you not bring that out and clear this accusation once and for all.
By genuine evidence I mean the people (the 3 scholars and 1 naat khawan I only mentioned these people because they are well known) that were also in the video. If he is truly innocent then he would bring these people on his show and have them clarify that this never happened and the video is FAKE.
Three days or so have passed and we have not seen these people on his show clarifying his position. Instead we see people are calling and saying that video is FAKE/dubbed/edited and they would never suspect him to do such things.
If he is innocent and brings these people on his show to clarify, not only will this clear his name it will bring more respect and popularity for him probably 10 times his current.
If he is not going to do such for whatever reason, I think media should step in and go and interview these people (the 3 scholars and 1 naat khawan) to see if this really happened. I think it is the responsibility of the media to intervene in these matters.
Beyond this I would say the matter is now between him and Allah. The Quran ascribes to Allah is khayru al-makireen (is used in Suras 8:30 and 10:21), that Allah is "the best deceiver/schemer/conniver/planner." So the real truth will come out one day.
I am the least bit interested in this issue. HOWEVER in general, if someone on tv is preaching ISLAM according to the Quran and Sunnah. Nothing else that he says, Matters, Nobody is perfect and the Prophet himself has said that you dont have to do good to preach good (right way of Islam).
AND..if that person is creating innovations (biddat) by tweaking circumstances in ISLAM, he should be thrown off the channel at once. Changing a religion for the ease of oneself, is a new religion.
This is the hadith I was talking about: Anas relates that, “We asked the Prophet ﷺ, ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, shouldn’t we refrain from calling others to goodness if we don’t practice all good things ourselves, and shouldn’t we refrain from forbidding wrong things until we ourselves have abstained from all the bad?’ ‘No,’ he replied, ‘You should call others to goodness even if you don’t do all good, and you should forbid bad things even if you don’t abstain from all of them yourselves.’” (Al-Tabarani)
While the things you're saying may be true, you need to keep one thing in mind, the people who watch Amir Liaquat's show are hardly people who'd be following trends on facebook, and while they certainly must've heard about the video, most of them probably haven't seen it. The very people who saw and shared the video on facebook are busy making facebook groups, funny little status updates, and posters for films staring 'doctor' sahab himself
His callers could be as fake as the 'Dr' himself. Who knows! but at least his 'veil' has been lifted.
I always suspected this guy....he resembled Jimmy Swaggart and some of the other fallen-from-grace American televangelists too much. Granted, he hasn't been caught in a whore house yet, but he has certainly breached the trust thousands seem to vest in him. For that reason he ought to be fired.
At least now people know what happens off-air in studios of Pakistan. This is the camera's miracle when it is ON it makes most inhuman object a man. We must not take for granted what is being shown on TV programs. Those pious faces are really not what they pretend. I wonder why Pakistanis eulogize him as religious scholar.
Amir Liaquat has survived worse and thrived, its a pathetic situation. Nicely explained.
@Frank: I'd say the proverb "Mind your own business" simply does not apply to this man, given how much he has researched on Pakistan and integrated himself with it. In fact, he has all the right to make any and all statements he made, and I for one agree with him completely. What he said was a hundred percent correct and I salute this man for caring enough about Pakistan to express his opinions and concern in the way he did.
@Urooj, sounding educated. Throwing im some great GRE words but still calling the video a fake. Im utterly flabbergasted. I have educated, brilliant friends. Epitomes of intelligence. Yet when they say this video is fake i feel like banging my head against the wall.
i agree with George's views...indeed as Ummah, we have given up our quest for knowledge by self-studying and critical reading ...instead we tend to look up to the scholars in the media and believe whatever they tell us!
@Frank: i am assuming you have your answer....you are the only one who found "this Englishman’s tone and message patronising and offensive". Peace!
Excellent....
This article is brilliant!
Excellent!!!...Brilliant!.... And I hope people will not "Fall in Love" with George for this.....rather would try to understand the point he is trying to highlight.....great effort George!....
He is a ignorant hypocrite plain and simple. Predictions of such people were made fourteen hundred years ago and have been incorporated in our holy scriptures.
Absolutely right, it was obvious that our poor simple fellow men were worshiping amir liaqat like a religious leader, a man who doesn't like to respect woman, ask the females taff of geo how much they hate amir liaqt for his dirty and abusive attitude. Even the young interns used to make fun of this man just becuz he harrass people with his natural cheap style , I m sure half of the viewers will still be in denial and will support this cheap low standard comedian
Dear George, you are trying to shovel against the tide. Your advice would fall on deaf ears, to say the least. I don't know who this con man is/was, but it is not his fault. If people are looking for false heros then it is their own choice. Even a con man has a right to make a living. Why do peole believe in all they see on TV? It is all acting and a gateway to movies and politics. Not much is real in movies and on TV, it is not a rocket science to know that. Let us not try to confuse things with logic as far as naive public is concerned. They would continue to love con artists in religious garb. I do love your article though. Nice try!
Hey George, I respect you as a Pakistani. You are indeed weirdly courageous amongst us to point out our flaws as people with psychological problems. Well, more generally we are people trying our best to survive. I was kind of sad when I heard you had left Pakistan but where you are you definitely have some aspects of Pakistan with you and you show your care in a unique criticizing way by observing us and actually being concerned about us. The thing with having a split personality in home, in school or even in workplace is considered norm among our nation because of false sense of respect which is ingrained into us. I totally believe in respecting elders and religious figures but at the end of the day honesty with a certain sense of decorum should also be appreciated. I think honesty should also be displayed about extreme liberals too like your friend NFP who indeed has his own opinion but tends to insist on a version of country which the whole majority is certainly not ready to accept in present form. His biased crtitiques also ten to favor a party which is writing a new manual on " How to be completely incompetent and remain in Power". His own past events and respect for liberal militancy which was openly displayed on his blog leaves me a little daunted when none of the other media people feel the need to point out this other version of hypocracy. I think people need to be exposed for their true selfs including our politicians. It may not impact all of their ardent followers but it will at least leave the ground open for others who want to make more rational decisions based on available facts.
As much as i dislike that fake liaqat person, and believe that we live in a mental state of persistent denial, yet this time the reaction by people wasnt as hopeless as suggested in this article. Most of the polls conducted show a clear win of 90 over 10% where the majority believes the video is genuine and are disgusted by the reality of that self-proclaimed 'scholar'. just check fb pages, those in his favor and defense are minute compared to those bashing him for his hypocrisy. plus even if we leave cyber stats out of it, this issue is one of the most discussed things everywhere, whether im in university or just in some other casual circle, i find most people voicing against him now. but ofcourse there are some exceptions of die hard blind fans-but they are pretty less compared to those talking sense so it sends a positive vibe. generally we have the case of majority acting nuts verses a few sane voices, so this time if things are a little better then lets not lament on people acting their usual way when they actually are not. leave that for other incidents, which are bound to occur-packaged with the typical irrational reaction of people.
And "D"ear Ghalib.
Very good article with deep analysis about Pakistan society as a whole...
George,
You forget that the tape was made by a technically advanced entity such as a "TV channel" and they used the magical "editing machine" and it was all "cut2cut, cut2cut" so OBVIOUSLY it was fake! Now stop being a British agent for the Ahmedis and please join us for Iftari in Mezan Ramazan Hamsafar....
great article! I agree that we are victim of our own faults and mistakes and you might be happy to know that some of the youth is working on it. We were working on making Pakistan better by making ourselves better and not blaming others for our mistakes. I don't care if that video was good or not but I know one things that a wise man is the one who learn good and leave bad and a weak minded learns bad and leave good no matter in what situation you put him in. Ego has been a big problem for us for decades, and I believe that we all will open our eyes and try to be better on our own first. When I read articles like these I see comments either saying good article or just criticizing the article. Only few people give value to their comment. I am a student myself and don't have much of an intellectual level as most of the other readers but one thing I learned from my friend is being optimistic, being consistent and being helpful is the way to rebuilt a nation. We need to open our hearts for each other. I am tired of reading that Pakistani nation is a great nation now its time to be one. Pakistan needs new soul (nation).
It is, indeed, a sad day. Reading comments that parrot what Amir Liaquat said (it was all editing and was done by people jealous of his success), I was saddened, yet again. Just when I think there may be SOME hope of us turning a new leaf, people stand up for completely corrupt and unethical demagogues. I'll take the "easy" way out and throw my hands up and give up on this society altogether.
true that we follow phonies and develop our ideologies based on their teachings rather then making our own.
It's interesting how you use the word "We" and yet you're the one who left the country...
but I do agree with your point of views nonetheless..
So very true George. We are the biggest obstacle in our own road towards progress, and this incident and the general reaction to it is just reflection on i micro level. I suppose if I read a script and claim to be a religious scholar on TV, i can do no wrong.
By that i meant DR sahib.
Excellently written article. Exactly my sentiments.
