LAHORE: A Gas Act is in the offing and is likely to be on the ground in the next six months, said the Chairman of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), Mian Misbahur Rehman.

The SNGPL chairman was addressing a gathering of the business community at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Wednesday.

Rehman said that as soon as the legislation takes shape, it would help control pilferage as there would be severe punishment for gas theft.

He said that with an objective to facilitate gas consumers in the city of Lahore, a proposal to divide the city into four zones is under consideration which is likely to be approved in the next board meeting.

He said that another proposal to make Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Sargodha and Sahiwal separate regions is also under consideration.

He said that the SNGPL board has granted approval for placement of gas data on its website and it would soon be there.

To a question about planned 12-day gas holiday, the SNGPL chairman said that it has now been postponed and it would be observed during Eid holidays. He said that the decision has been taken in the larger interest of the business community.

Rehman also promised that all measures are being taken to eliminate gas outages and soon the SNGPL would be able to ensure a continuous supply of gas to its consumers.

Speaking on the occasion, the Managing Director of SNGPL, Abdul Rashid Lone said that existing gas reservoirs were depleting fast but it is encouraging that a number of new fields were coming up that would help improve gas supply.
