JEHLUM:

Two policemen were arrested after the death of a 26-year-old young man in custody in the City Chowki Cantonment Police Station.

Sub-Inspector Naveed Afzal and Head Constable Mohammad Tanvir were arrested on the orders of the District Police Officer (DPO) Tahir-ur-Rehman, who had taken note of the custodial death of the young man identified as Waleed Mehmood, a resident of Dina Jhelum.

The DPO also suspended the entire staff of the Cantt police post and ordered an inquiry into the death.

According to sources, Waleed Mehmood had been kept in a private cell for the last 20 days, where he was tortured by the police.

The victim's family found 10 days after the arrest that he was in police custody. According to the family, no case had been registered against him by the police.

According to the sources, Waleed was shifted to the Cantt police post after his health deteriorated in the alleged cell and later he died in custody.

According to the sources, the police shifted the victim’s body to the Civil Hospital and attempted to get a fake medical report to hush up the death.
