KARACHI:

Sindh Information and Labour Minister Saeed Ghani said that the Muttahida Quami Movement has, once again, launched an attempt to cause an ethnic conflict in Karachi as it clearly sees defeat in the forthcoming local government elections.

Speaking at a press conference at the Sindh Assembly building on Wednesday, the minister said that opposition political parties had resorted to protests against the newly-passed Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill-2021. He claimed this only proved that they had no interest in the genuine problems of the people of the province. He conceded that there would be drawbacks in the working of the Sindh government and an effort could be made to overcome these issues. However, he added that the same problems shouldn't be used as a pretext to undermine the law and order situation and promote hatred in the province.

"We condemn such an attempt and will not let it succeed," he said.

He said if MQM wanted to disturb peace in Karachi and their campaign to this effect was condemnable. The information minister said although MQM claimed Karachi belonged to it, the party very much remained part of the process carried out in Islamabad to approve the controversial population census results against the interests of the province.
