Varsity students develop tools for recycling plastic

Official govt establish strong linkage between academia and industry

ISLAMABAD:

Low-cost state-of-the-art machines for recycling plastic waste were displayed by students from five leading universities at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) at an event on Wednesday.

The event was titled ‘Plastic Waste Management and its Low-Cost Solutions.’ It became a source of attraction for visitors from national and international departments, and received an overwhelmingly positive response from those in attendance.

The machines in question were developed by engineering students of the IIUI, National University of Science Technology (NUST), Capital University of Science and Technology (CUST), and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), and Institute of Space Technology (IST). The machines were approved and awarded by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF).

During the function, dignitaries and officials witnessed the practical demonstration of the conversion of waste material recycled into plastic. Products created included tough tiles and plastic thread.

Speaking on the occasion, as a chief guest, Ministry of Science and Technology Additional Secretary Dr Syed Attaur Rehman said that they were striving to establish a strong linkage between academia and industry. He hoped that this would put knowledge into practice for the collective good of the people.

Dr Rehman said that Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz was quite active on this front, pushing for the establishment of strong links between universities and industries. This would ensure that the latest knowledge and innovations at the academic level could be put into practice.
