A joint action plan was agreed to here for the protection, empowerment and development of women and the transgender community in the society under the gender equality priority goals set under the 2030 agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Chairperson Provincial Taskforce on Gender Equality Uzma Kardar pledged to work with all task force members for the betterment of the marginalised segment of the society.
She said that the government of Punjab has identified SDG goal-5 gender equality as one of the priority goals in Punjab’s 2030 agenda of sustainable development.
“Empowering women and girls, transgender community and persons with special abilities and promoting gender equality is crucial to accelerating sustainable development in Pakistan. While Punjab has developed a strong mechanism to achieve the SDGs while several challenges to the achievement of SDG goal-5 remain to be achieved.
A meeting in this regard was attended by the representatives from 23 government departments including the Punjab Women Protection Authority, the Women Chamber of Commerce and the Punjab Ombudsperson Office.
On the occasion, Secretary Punjab Assembly Inayatullah Lak also highlighted the significance of the role of each and every department and ensured the Punjab Assembly’s full support for ensuring legislative and policy actions.
Representatives from UNDP, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA and UNWOMEN assured their full support.
