La Casa De Papel, popularly known as Money Heist, is one of Netflix's most famous foreign originals. The show, which has an ample fan base, recently concluded the first part of its fifth and final season. However, the heists will go on with the apparent versions of the Spanish show. Earlier, a Korean rendition of Money Heist was announced. Now, seems like Bollywood, too, is all set to release its take on the crime thriller.
According to Pinkvilla, Indian director duo Abbas Mastan are all set to return to the direction duties with Three Monkeys, which is heavily inspired by Money Heist. “The Abbas Mustan duo is getting back to the thriller space with Three Monkeys and is currently all geared up to commence shooting from November 11. The script work is done and the current concentration is on to create a massive set in the city,” an insider shared.
“It’s actually on the lines of Money Heist with the premise revolving around three male protagonists and a professor, who is a mastermind of the robbery. Like all other quintessential Abbas Mustan films, this one too will have hidden motives with every character trying to outplay the other,” the source told the publication. "It's not exactly a scene-by-scene remake, but more of a film inspired by the vibe and set up of this iconic series."
Bollywood star Arjun Rampal has been roped in for the role of the Professor in the film. A source close to the filmmakers shared, “Arjun Rampal’s character is on the lines of Professor from the show, whereas Mustafa along with two other actors will be playing the robbers. All the three robbers, alongside the Professor, will have a unique dimension, with all working together for a hidden motive of personal gains.” The insider further commented, "Abbas Mustan have been a master at adapting international thrillers and in the same way, they have brought in their own flavor to the narrative of Three Monkeys."
The film has already begun the first spell of shooting. Sharing a selfie from the sets, Arjun wrote on Instagram, “Lights camera action. Onset again. A new journey begins.”
This, however, isn't the first time news of Bollywood working on a Money Heist-inspired project has been making rounds. In 2019, it was reported that Shah Rukh Khan is all set to bring Netflix's Spanish thriller to the big screen. Indian outlet KoiMoi had previously reported that SRK's production house, Red Chillis Entertainment has bagged the rights of the show.
A source told Mumbai Mirror, "Shah Rukh Khan was introduced to Money Heist by one of his partners. He loves the show and believes it can be adapted in the Indian context as a feature film. There is no clarity on Shah Rukh Khan’s involvement as an actor. At this point of time, he is only producing it," the source informed, adding that the cast will be decided based on the script. "SRK has always been open to involving other actors in his production ventures."
We aren't sure if SRK's project is still in the works but we are excited to see Rampal as the cunning Professor. Three Monkeys is slated to release in 2022.
