US tries to stem funds to Haqqani network commander
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton designated commander Sangeen Zadran under an executive order signed by President George W. Bush in 2001 in a bid to block funds to suspected terrorists, the State Department said.
"As a result of the designation, all property subject to US jurisdiction in which Sangeen has any interest is blocked and US persons are prohibited from engaging in any transactions with him," it added.
He is also blacklisted under the UN 1988 Sanctions Committee, which the State Department said requires all UN member states to enforce an assets freeze, a travel ban, and an arms embargo against Zadran.
"Zadran is the shadow governor for Paktika Province, Afghanistan and a commander of the Haqqani Network," based in North Waziristan Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan, it said.
Affiliated with the Taliban, the Haqqani network is considered the most dangerous enemy of US troops in eastern Afghanistan.
It was founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani and is run by his son, Sirajuddin, both of them already designated "global terrorists" by Washington.
The network has been blamed for some of the deadliest anti-US attacks in Afghanistan, including a suicide attack at a US base in the eastern province of Khost in 2009 that killed seven CIA operatives.
"Zadran helps lead fighters in attacks across southeastern Afghanistan, and is believed to have planned and coordinated the movement of hundreds of foreign fighters into Afghanistan," the State Department said.
It linked Zadran to many attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and suspected him of having orchestrated the kidnappings of Afghans and foreign nationals in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.
Sangeen also acts as a senior lieutenant to Sirajuddin Haqqani, the State Department said.

I was out there at begining of the year with trade delegation as to understand the problems on ground, spent over a week there!!!
@Maulana Diesel: I think your accounting is rather flawed, just like everything else form Pakistan !! We are not talking about a well trained sophisticated Army here, but a bunch of rag tags walking around with rocket launchers and AK47s !!! Rest assure that given the freedom to operate, US & ISAF can handle this matter at fraction of what its costing at present and deliver the goods in contructive time frame too !!!

The US have had carte blanche in Afghanistan/Iraq and Libya and after spending 2 trillion dollars they have nothing but losses.

Give US & ISAF, Carte Blanche to crossover to chase these people and see the results !!! Trust me it will all be over within months not years. What? Pakistan occupying Afghanistan? Are you smoking something, my friend? I know 'stuff' is available aplenty in Afghanistan. Let me jog your memory, I am sure you have forgotten. Who gave refuge to millions of Afghanis when Soviets invaded you? Who helped to get your country back and suffered as a consequence? India? Answer these questions and then we will talk further.

If Pakistan doesn't take any action now in North Waziristan, similar to the one they have taken in the South then it will be too late. When the US will pullout in 2014 it will put the blame sorely on Pakistan.
Tell me, what stops the World's sole Super Power to sanction Pakistan? I am sure Country's like Japan, South Korea, India will follow suit, followed by the EU! That is more than half of World's GDP right there..
I see very bad days for Pakistan after 2014. I am dead sure China will not step into the US shoes. China just doesn't think that way. Look at North Korea "supported" by China and South Korea supported by the US. They both are completely different Countries now, following different trajectories. Pakistan has to choose if it wants to be a North Korea.

@Imran Mohammad, What you need to understand, my friend, is that it is you, Pakistan, that is occupying a foreign country - Afghanistan. You have been occupying it since the late 80s and 90s with the Taliban(fully funded by you). And you still want to occupy Afghanistan after the US leaves the region. That is your concept of 'strategic depth'. One day the Afghans are going to get back at you - and it will be worse than how they get back at the US.

USA is only interested in eliminating the Haqqani Network and not at all Tehreek Taliban Pakistan. The destruction to Pakistan due to TTP which is funded by USA is more than the destruction due to the Haqqani network to NATO forces in Afghanistan. USA shall first stop sponsoring TTP if it is really serious in bringing peace in the region.
@Cautious, you should change your screen name to @blowhard or @hotair. North Waziristan is just an excuse for grand US failure in Afghanistan. Situation on the ground will not change. What needs to be understood is that US is occupying a foreign country and resistance to that is growing not receding as US military leaders claim.
