The demolition of illegally constructed six-storey building has begun in Lyari.
On Friday night, a complaint was received about an under-construction six-storey building on Yaqub Shera Road, Khada Market area of Baghdadi, Lyari. The authorities were informed that the building had tilted to one side and cracks were visible in its walls.
Police and administration personnel reached the scene, and found that residents of the nearby buildings and houses had come out of their residences fearing that the building might collapse on their houses. According to Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), the plot area is 60 square yards and the building plan was not approved. The building has been under construction for the last three years and portion-like flats were being constructed.
According to the SBCA, demolition work has been started on the building, which will be completed in a week.
Residents and sources in the area said that the building was being constructed with the connivance of SBCA and district administration. In Lyari, there are dozens of buildings constructed on plots measuring 50 to 100 square yards, building plans of which have not been approved.
It may be recalled that in the past several incidents of building collapse in different areas were reported in different areas of the city including Golimar, Liaquatabad, Malir and Allahwala Town in which many precious lives were lost.
