ISLAMABAD:

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has commenced a pilot project on the plastic road concept in the federal capital.

According to the CDA, 500 to 600 tonnes of municipal waste is collected in Islamabad on a daily basis, along with 150 to 180 tonnes of plastic waste. By recycling the collected plastic, environmental pollution will be significantly reduced, it said.

The trial project has been started at F-9 Park. This is the first initiative of its kind in Pakistan, and is being launched in collaboration with a private company, the CDA said.

The CDA had signed an MoU a month ago with a private beverage company, under which work has been started as a test project.

Once the results of the project were examined, the concept will not only be utilised in Islamabad but will also be replicated in other cities of the country. After observing the results of the initiative, a one-kilometre road will be constructed based on the plastic road concept.

The test engineering results of the project will be taken from today, after which the technology will be introduced in other parts of Islamabad for road construction. This technology will also be transferred to the asphalt plant of MPO directorate after evaluating the final results.
