LAHORE:

Pakistan Railways (PR) has increased the fares of passenger trains by 10 per cent and freight trains by five per cent in view of rising prices of petroleum products in the country.

According to a statement issued by the PR spokesman, the increase in fares of passenger trains would take effect from November 1 and the fares of freight trains would be increased from November 5.

The spokesman said that Pakistan Railways had already constituted a committee to increase the train fares and the body had proposed a 15 per cent increase in train fares.

He said the railways' ministry decided to reduce the economic burden on passengers.

Similarly, the authorities have also allowed the management of private and outsourced trains to increase fares of private trains by 10 per cent.

The increase in fares comes amid a rocketing surge in prices. The petrol price earlier this month jumped by Rs10.49, making it Rs137.79.

Due to the increase in fares by the railway authorities, the financial burden will fall directly on the people, many of whom rely on affordable and cheap transport.
