MDA challenges reopening of NAB probe

MDA's counsel says resumption of closed investigation is nothing short of harassment

KARACHI:

The Malir Development Authority (MDA) has challenged a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) inquiry in the Sindh High Court.

The court issued notices to the NAB prosecutor and the federal government on the application MDA against a NAB inquiry into illegal recruitment in the authority.

A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, heard the petition against the NAB inquiry.

MDA's lawyer Farooq H Naik took the position that NAB had closed its inquiry on allegations of illegal recruitment in 2016.

He said the resumption of a closed investigation was nothing short of harassment on the part of the accountability watchdog.

"The inquiry has been started in MDA, not on corruption but recruitment."

Naik requested that NAB stop taking action against the MDA.

Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto remarked that NAB could not be stopped from taking action. "Let the notice be answered, and it will be seen later."

The court also issued notices to the NAB prosecutor and the federal government, seeking arguments from the MDA's counsel regarding the petition's admissibility. The court sought a reply from the parties on November 19.
