Punjab govt to carry out delimitation of UCs

Village council will be created for 15,000, neighbourhood council for 20,000 people.

RAWALPINDI:

The Punjab government has decided to carry out the delimitation of union councils (UCs) under the news local government system.

A village council will be created for a population of 15,000 and a neighbourhood council for a population of over 20,000 people.

After the new delimitation, the number of councils in the local government across Punjab will increase by 20 to 25 per cent.

Sources said that the government will also earmark one seat for senior citizens in each council while a new system of Panchayat will also be introduced in the new system.

A five-member Panchayat council will nominate the chairman of the village council and all communities in a village will be given equal representation in it.

The council will be responsible for looking after cleanliness, schools and other minor civic issues at the village level, besides disposing of petty disputes.

The Punjab government will soon apprise the Lahore High Court through a detailed report, while the process of delimitation will start after formal approval by the provincial cabinet.
