Organic farming law on the cards

Official says demand for organic food is rising with each passing day.

MULTAN:

The Agriculture Department of South Punjab has shared plans to draft a law to regulate organic farming, its certification and lower chances of further degradation of ecosystem besides winning premium price for farmers, said South Punjab Agriculture Secretary Saqib Ali Ateel.

Speaking at a meeting, he said that the demand for organic food was rising with each passing day all over the world and Pakistan needed to make efforts to encourage organic agriculture and eliminate use of pesticides on food products.

He further called for enhancing the accessibility of chemical fertilisers for majority of the population to ensure its good health.

Saqib formed a committee and tasked it to prepare a draft of the organic farming audit and certification act.

On the occasion, Pakistan Organic Association (POA) Director Saim Rasheed delivered a presentation and stated that certified organic farming covers an area of 200 million acres around the world.  “Around 719 institutions are operational in the world for organic certification,” he said.
