KARACHI:

The police arrested two suspected terrorists on Friday and claimed to have foiled a terror bid planned to mar Independence Day celebrations today (Saturday). Two activists of the proscribed Sindh Revolution Army were arrested in an operation carried out in Soomar Jokhio Goth, Gulshan-e-Hadeed and two hand grenades were found in their possession, said officials.

According to Malir SSP Irfan Bahadur, the suspects, identified as Akram Chandio and Sheeraz Soomro, were planning a grenade attack last year.

The SSP said that Chandio had also facilitated a hand grenade attack carried out on Independence Day last year on the directives of the SRA.

Besides, the arrested suspect has confessed to have facilitated an attack on Inspector Amir Riaz in February 2020, he added.

Meanwhile, Soomro is accused of conveying messages to the SRA terrorists in prisons and abroad.

Both the suspects have also confessed to collecting funds for the banned outfit, said the SSP, adding that further probe is underway.
