Federal institutions ready to curb street crime: Haleem

284 people killed by robbers in Karachi in the first seven months of 2021

Federal institutions are ready to play their part to reign in robbers, drug peddlers and smugglers in Sindh, said Opposition Leader in Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh Sunday. Addressing a press conference, he questioned the performance of the Sindh Police and levelled corruption allegations at Sindh IGP Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar.

According to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader, the 'corrupt' police force has failed to maintain law and order in the province and the IGP only serves the Sindh chief minister and the Pakistan Peoples Party leadership.

Referring to data recorded by the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), Haleem said that 284 people were killed by robbers in Karachi in the first seven months of 2021. Besides, 30,000 motorcycles, 1,200 cars and 15,000 mobile phones were stolen in the metropolis during this time period, he added.

Drugs were found in vehicles and residences of police officers but no action was taken, according to Haleem. The opposition leader accused the IGP of corruption and claimed he was associated with criminal elements and called for federal intervention. With regards to coronavirus restrictions, Haleem said he was grateful that the 'unnecessarily harsh restrictions' have been lifted.
