Veteran Indian actor Surekha Sikri passes away

India’s National Award-winning star breathed her last on July 16 due to a cardiac failure.

Veteran Indian actor Surekha Sikri has passed away due to a cardiac failure at the age of 75 in Mumbai. She breathed her last at 8:30 AM on July 16, 2021, according to Pinkvilla. She was reportedly admitted to a hospital due to atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease and a cerebrovascular accident.

The news of her demise has left everyone in Bollywood and several in Pakistan in a state of utter shock. The senior star was admitted to the hospital back in September 2020 after suffering a brain stroke. Sikri had suffered a similar stroke back in 2018. She fell down and injured her head, which eventually, allegedly, led to a brain stroke and paralysis during the shoot of a TV show in Mahabaleshwar.

A statement from her spokesperson reads, "Three-time national award-winning actress, Surekha Sikri has passed away following a cardiac arrest earlier this morning at the age of 75. She had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke. She was surrounded by family and her caregivers. The family asks for privacy at this time. Om Sai Ram."

Sikri has played an instrumental role in the evolvement of Indian theatre, film and television industry. Her first stint, a political drama title Kissa Kursi Ka, came out in 1978. She then became a part of several Hindi soap operas. Born in UP, she went onto polish her acting skills at the National School of Drama in 1971. The seasoned actor also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989. Her role of Kalyani Devi in Balika Vadhu is one of the most popular in Indian television.

In 2019, she garnered immense praise with her portrayal of dadi in Badhaai Ho co-starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao and Sanya Malhotra. Because of her astounding performance, she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She received her third National Film Award at the 66th National Films Awards Ceremony in a wheelchair. She previously won the same for Tamas and Mammo. Her last performance was in Zoya Akhtar's segment of Ghost Stories that premiered on Netflix.
