If animals could speak and get a top notch lawyer, they would roam scot-free: Adnan Siddiqui

Actor has asked why our legal system 'loses its bite' when children are sexually assaulted and mothers are gangraped

Actor Adnan Siddiqui on Sunday condemned the decision to euthanise two German Shepherds that mauled a lawyer in an upscale Karachi neighbourhood last month. According to a compromise agreement reached between the canines’ owner and the victim, the dogs were to be “put down”.

Many were appalled by the agreement and called out the owners for their negligence. Now, the Meray Paas Tum Ho actor has criticised the legal system, which according to him, swings into action only after a crime is recorded on camera and circulated on social media.

In the caption of his statement shared on Instagram, he warned, “I am deliberately not sharing the picture of the dogs who are to be euthanised to not hurt the sentiments of the family and animal lovers.” His statement read: “A very inhuman thing to euthanize dogs for mauling. The damage of the attack is three pronged; on the gentleman who was injured, the family that lost their pets and the dogs that were put to sleep.”

It added, “I am sure if the poor animals could speak and get a top notch lawyer to represent them, they would have gone scot-free. While our authorities were quick to administer justice, I wish they showed the same alacrity towards rapists and child abusers who remain on the loose. Why does the law lose its bite when children are sexually assaulted, mothers are gangraped, goons like Usman Mirza and his ilk blackmail an innocent girl after outraging her modesty? First we need social media clamour for authorities to take notice and act, then the endless road to justice, with hardly any hope. How misplaced are our legal system’s priorities!”

Siddiqui went on to add that since his name was dragged into the matter without any reason earlier, he offered his sympathy to the injured and prayed for his speedy recovery of the injured.

Previously, actors Mashal Khan, Yasir Hussain and Feroze Khan shared a similar sentiment regarding the matter. The Suno Chanda star took to Instagram and wrote, "In a country where rapists, murderers and pedophiles roam free, two dogs are given the death sentence for their owner’s negligence."

The dogs attacked the lawyer when he was out on a morning walk in the quaint neighbourhood of Khyaban-e-Rahat, DHA Phase VI. The CCTV footage of the incident that went viral on social media showed the two canines pouncing on Mirza Akhtar and pinning him to the ground as he helplessly tried to defend himself. It was only after the owner’s son intervened, that the dogs spared the lawyer – badly mauled and bleeding.
